LAC awards county-wide winners

From staff reports

November 22, 2002 - The Lincoln Arts Council held its annual County-wide Art Show awards presentation Sunday, Nov. 10.

Winners were recognized and awarded cash prizes. Winners in this year’s competition are as follows:

First place, Tom Owen of Gastonia with “Serenity”

Second place, Carroll Morrell of Lincolnton with “Three Arches”

Third place, Andrea St. John of Lincolnton with “Rebirth”

Honorable mentions, Libba Thompson of Denver with “Mutual Affection,” Perry Propst of Lincolnton with “Coffey’s General Store,” and Tom Owen of Gastonia with “Birches”

The juror for this year’s show was Ginger Spangler of Lawndale. A native of Fallston, she graduated summa cum laude from the University of North Carolina with a bachelor in fine arts. She has won many competitions and is known for her unique collages.

Spangler and her partner, Sally Royster, have recently opened Cleveland Springs Fine Arts, a fine art gallery in Shelby. The gallery has exhibited such artists as sculptor Bob Troutman, painter Elizabeth Millsaps and pastel artist Elizabeth Mowry. Their next exhibit will feature the work of Cathy Baker-Thuot who has also exhibited for the Lincoln Arts Council.

The juror said, “Although the prizes being awarded are in two-dimensional media, it was very difficult because of the broad range of materials. Each artist has a concept and has demonstrated a vision which sets the piece apart.”

The show is on exhibit in the Cochrane and Carolina Mills Galleries of the Lincoln Cultural Center and will be on display Monday through Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. and from 2 to 5 p.m. Sundays through Dec. 16.

For more information call the Lincoln Arts Council, 704-732-9044.
