Holiday Happenings

Nov. 30 - The following is a list of activities planned for the month of December:

Thursday, Nov. 29 through Saturday, Dec. 20

Santa comes to town

Santa Claus will visit downtown Lincolnton on Thursdays and Fridays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Main Street Market Place.

Crewel Beauty

Nov. 30 - Most of the designs are florals and landscapes, all with vibrant colors. Flowers burst from their yarn vases; hummingbirds are frozen in midair; and England’s rolling hills pop out of their frames.

(Left) This scene of the rolling hills of England has been framed and hangs on the living room wall of the Heaslip house. Robert and Jackie found the pattern while visiting Wales. (Right) Many of the pieces Heaslip creates are floral pictures with more than 30 colors entwined into the fabric.

Robert Heaslip spends approximately two hours a day working on crewel embroidery. His wife Jackie uses the time to catch up on her crossword puzzles. Heaslip's colorful creations cover the walls of their Lincolnton home.

Center offers aid to those with sleep disorders

Nov. 23 - Not even a heaping helping of turkey helps some people get a good night’s sleep.

For some, catching some shut-eye is a job in itself.

“I wake up in the middle of the night. It’s like something just jars me,” Dana McGinnis said, a Lincolnton homemaker, who, like many Americans, does not sleep well.

Sleep technician Andy Young adheres electrodes to Dana McGinnis as she begins the process of having a sleep study done at Lincoln Medical Center.

Young checks McGinnis' pulse, oxygen levels and other statistics on the monitor while the patient sleeps in a room across the hall.

Ministry aims to build ‘fulfilling’ relationships

Nov. 23 - The intent is to strengthen the church, one person at a time. That’s church in the broad sense — the church community — not any one church or denomination.

“As individual needs are met and couples are restored, it’s going to strengthen the local churches,” says Nathan Grooms, a Lincolnton pastor, who has opened a downtown office housing Fulfilling Love Ministries, a ministry aimed at helping individuals and couples  develop better relationships with family, friends and ultimately God.

Nathan Grooms, director of Fulfilling Love Ministries, is providing individual and group counseling at his Sycamore Street offices.

Don’t forget to have fun this season

Nov. 23 - With Thanksgiving fresh in our minds, and left-over turkey still on our plates — we can’t avoid it: Christmas is on its way.

Let’s face it. Stress will haunt us the next month. Yet despite the rushing and wrapping, most of us will have some merry moments — especially if we take advantage of some very special Lincoln County holiday events.

Charity-minded students

Nov. 19 - Members of the Bible Club and FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) at West Lincoln High School recently collected more than $370 from students to give gifts to needy children. (Below) Elizabeth Payseur, who headed the project, helps pack the boxes before they are distributed to needy children. The students used the money to purchase items that filled shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. Gift boxes donated to Operation Christmas Child are given to needy children around the globe. Since its inception in 1993, over 13 million shoe boxes have been delivered.

Southern Christmas Show

Nov. 16 - It’s the same Southern Christmas Show — lots of glitter, glitz and gifts — only this year with a patriotic twist. Red, white and blue ornaments and flags are tucked into tree limbs as decorations. Bunting is twisted into wreaths. And even Santa may have an American flag pin tucked under his beard.

Darrell Fulbright of Vale offers country primitive Christmas fare in his Ful O'Bright Ideas shop. Most of the items are handmade locally, he says.

Show draws diverse works

County-wide exhibit

Nov. 9 - Diversity appears to be the theme for this year’s Lincoln Arts Council County-wide Art Show.

“This exhibit presents a wide array of media, artistic concepts and technical proficiency — which made judging all the more difficult,” said David Estey, juror for the show.

Mary Jane Howard, director of the Lincoln Arts Council, and Jason Harpe of the Lincoln County History Museum, discuss the first place entry, by Cynthia Moore Jones. "Mountains and Fields" is a three-piece pastel work.

Aptitude, attitude land East senior Governor’s School slot

Nov. 7 - East Lincoln High’s Mandy Walker was the only student at the school chosen to attend the prestigious Governor’s School last summer.

It’s just another victory over severe hearing loss for the vibrant senior who turns 18 later this month.

“A lot of people are amazed I do some of the stuff I do, because of my hearing loss,”  she said.
