A fleet of golfers started out Tuesday morning, scorecards in hand and charity in mind.
Participants in the Times Oil Golf Classic teed off at Verdict Ridge to raise money for Hospice of Lincoln County and Hospice of Charlotte.
The tournament, now in its fourth year, partnered with Hospice for the first time — raising more than $10,000.
“Hospice of Lincoln County has sponsored a tournament for years. This year we were able to hook up with the Times Oil group,” says Larry Dawalt, director of community outreach with
Hospice.
Dawalt says the money raised from the annual event aids in patient support.
Hospice is a nonprofit organization that helps terminally ill patients and their families. The services can be quite costly, says Dawault.
“It takes a tremendous amount of community support to run our organization,” he says.
Hunter Boyd with Times Oil feels Hospice is a worthy cause.
“We strongly believe in what they do,” he says.
Times Oil — now a chain of stores in North and South Carolina — began in Lincolnton, says Boyd.
“Since Times Oil was started in Lincoln County, we thought we should do something for Hospice of Lincoln County,” he says.
Approximately 80 golfers turned out for Tuesday’s event. Times Oil venders provided snacks and drinks.
The 20 teams headed out on the course at about 10:30 a.m. The breezy, sunny day was just what participants were hoping for.
“We’re just pleased with the success of this year and we look forward to seeing its growth next year,” says Nancy Cole, Hospice special events coordinator.
The day of competition wrapped up with a barbecue lunch, silent auction and raffle.
Dawalt says the positive comments and participation are what keep Hospice and its services going.
“We’ve never had to say no to anybody and it’s because of events like this,” he says.
