United We Stand

Following the terror attacks Sept. 11, 2001, Americans expressed their sorrow for lives lost and their patriotism towards their country. (Top) Memorial services were held on the courthouse lawn. Local law enforcement officers and firefighters honored emergency workers who lost their lives as a result of the attacks. (Middle) Children waved American flags and sat silently as patriotic music and speeches were broadcast. (Bottome)Many churches held special prayer services providing support and prayer for families of victims.

Families attended the ceremonies, held at the courthouse, cultural center and many churches. Some waved flags while others wept as patriotic music played, testimonials to heroes were spoken and the Pledge of Allegiance was said in unison.

Following the terror attacks, Rock Springs Elementary School and schools across the county participated in special flag ceremonies as children tried to understand what was happening. Balloons were released and flags were waved in hope of recovering from the tragedy.
Children and adults also gathered at various can-dlelight vigils.

Remembering and mourning lives lost on 9/11

  • Thursday marked the second anniversary of the day the United States came under attack. Thousands of lives were lost in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania, and American life changed forever.
  • Through the pain and the struggle to understand, Americans and Lincoln County residents came together to grieve and try to move on. Ceremonies, memorials and observances were held.
  • Those same events were held Thursday. Children and adults heard messages from families of the victims broadcast on radio and TV. American flags were lowered to half-staff, and area schools held programs and focused some lesson plans on the value of living in the United States.
