Mary Lou Seagle thanks God each morning for another day.
“I thank him to give me the strength to do the things that I have got to do that day,” Seagle said. “The Lord has been so good to me.”
Seagle is involved with her church, Hulls Grove Baptist where she has been attending since she was a teenager.
Sitting in her armchair in her living room, she pulls out a supply of her 20 year pins.
“I have not missed a Sunday school class in 20 years,” she said. “If you don’t miss then you get a pin for each year.”
Seagle teaches the Sunday school class at her church for adult woman and has a range of people ages 18 to 85 years old. She is also on several committees at her church such as the
nominating committee and the bereavement committee, a program designed to help families deal with the loss of a loved one.
“The bereavement committee is used so people can call us and get a meal,” she said. “We serve it to the family.”
Seagle was the president of the Women’s Missionary Union for 18 years at her church.
Now she is the vice president of the church’s Senior Citizen’s Club.
Helping with the C.A.R.E. program at church is also a commitment for Seagle.
“We fill out requests for people,” she said. “We visit them and manage to many needs of the community.”
Helping in the community is something Seagle says she enjoys.
She has helped out working the blood mobile at church, monitoring the SAT test at West Middle and has helped with meals for North Brook Community Center.
Before volunteering in the community, Seagle used to work at Regal Manufacturing Company in Hickory for 27 years.
Seagle said she thanks the Lord for giving her a loving husband and family.
Although there have been some struggles in her life with cancer, Seagle’s faith held her together.
“My relationship with God got a lot stronger when I was sick,” she said. “I got through it with a lot of determination. I’m a fighter; I have always been.”
One of Seagle’s morning rituals is to have a daily Bible reading.
“I thank God and praise him everyday for all he has done in my life,” she said. “He is still working on me.”
