Lincoln Theatre Guild to teach drama to aspiring actors

Children laugh and wait eagerly to find out what the next birthday gift will be.
“Someone made a mistake. I got a dress,” says Adam Heafner.
The girls laugh hysterically as Heafner holds up an invisible garment.
The group continues the imaginary birthday party with a game of Pin the Tail on the Donkey. But there is no cake with candles at the end of the celebration.
The students sit in a circle with their teacher to talk about what they have learned.
“We just pantomimed an entire birthday party,” says acting instructor Andrea Tripodi.
And more parties are on the way.
Tripodi is teaching children the basics of acting in the Lincoln Theatre Guild’s Command the Stage classes.
Children, ages 10 and older, are learning the theories and movements of acting. Tripodi says being on stage can do wonders for kids.
“It helps build confidence and self awareness,” she says.
Tripodi is a board member of the LTG and has performed professionally and semi-professionally in theater, TV and film. She says acting has been instrumental for her.
“Having theater in my life as a student was really important to me,” she says. “I learned a lot more than acting in any drama class I ever took.”
But theater is not just for kids.
The guild is also offering instruction for adults. Peggie Boring will lead classes for adults. An English and drama instructor at Gaston College, Boring has directed numerous plays.
Tripodi says the Lincoln Theatre Guild decided to offer acting classes “to meet the needs of the community.”
Classes started this week and will continue for 12 weeks. New classes will begin in January 2004.
Tripodi and Boring have high hopes for their students.
“I want them to gain an appreciation for the theater and confidence in every day life,” says Tripodi.
