Nantahala trips are a whitewater rush

Rafting in the ‘Land of the noonday sun’

August 9, 2002 - Looking for one last summer thrill?

Rafting western North Carolina’s Nantahala River just might be it.

It’s a great way to cool off; the scenery is outstanding, and the race through whitewater hints of just enough danger to be exciting.

Crew members lug the raft to a launch point along a shallow point of the Nantahala River. Rafters climb aboard and prepare for an 8-mile trip down the river.

With a guide in the back, using his or her paddle as a rudder, crew members are able to take breaks often. Alice Smith relaxes for a moment as the raft reaches a calm part of the river.
