Six students from Lincoln County Schools recently attended the annual Rotary District 7670 Youth Leadership Camp held in Brevard. Brittany
Beeker, a rising junior at West Lincoln High School; Bethany Gilreath, rising senior at Lincolnton High; Daniel Hayes, rising junior at Lincolnton High; Mary Lineberger, rising junior at Lincolnton High; Allen
Sharpe, rising junior at East Lincoln High; and Zoe Williams, rising junior at Lincolnton High. These students were sponsored by the Lincolnton Rotary Club, the Lincolnton-Sunrise Rotary Club, and Denver/Lake Norman
Rotary Club.
The weeklong event was held at Brevard Music Camp and was attended by 53 high school leaders from throughout Western North Carolina.
During the week, the student leaders experienced activities on a high ropes course at the Earthshine Mountain Retreat near Brevard, participated in various team building exercises
designed to teach and develop leadership skills and attended over a dozen professional presentations, each focused on what it means to be a leader in our contemporary world. Campers participated in developmental
sessions classes or activities from 8:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. daily and returned to their respective communities equipped with new abilities which will enable them to function better as a youth leader.
According to Rotarian John Dorner, Youth Leadership Camp Director, the program had evolved over the past 38 years into a sophisticated, top-level experience for the campers. “Where else
can a teenager who is a student leader at their respective high school attend such a high quality program, learn advanced leadership skills for an entire week and all at the expense of their sponsoring District
Rotary Club?” asked Dorner.
Working to help build leadership qualities in our youth is a fantastic undertaking, one in which all our Rotarians are extremely proud.”
The Youth Leadership Camp is held annually with each of the attendees receiving sponsorships from their local Rotary Clubs. The members of the Rotary Club of Brevard administer the camp.
