We stopped people at the post office Wednesday afternoon to ask them this question:
Do you feel that we are showing the same patriotism for our country today with the war on terrorism and Iraq as our forefathers did in past wars?
Their answers:
“No. When you look back, it’s a totally different mindset. In the past it would have been unthinkable (to be unpatriotic). Today we’re like ‘I’m going to be as patriotic as I can as
long as I’m sitting on the couch watching TV.”
—Mark Ewing
“No. Too many liberals, too many democrats.”
—Barnie Petree
“Sometimes. I think we looked at 9-11 and bonded together. Sometimes I think we take for granted what it means to be patriotic. Sometimes we forget that we do live in one of the best
countries in the world.”
—Angela Hunter
“Probably not — it just depends on the time. I don’t think they are as it’s (the war) not immediate. With the Civil War it was right here. If people are threatened personally, I don’t
think (that they aren’t patriotic).
—Vicki Beam
“Since 9-11, I think we’ve forgotten about it. I wish people would be more patriotic.”
