Therapist’s job is a lifelong passion

Handiwork

By DIANE TURBYFILL, LTN Staff Writer

July 26, 2002 - Her strong hands work rhythmically as she describes the purpose of each movement.

Christina Stone’s hands bring relief for her customers, and a profitable, gratifying career for herself.

“I don’t just love my work, I’m in love with my work,” says the 22-year-old entrepreneur.

Owner of The Healing Touch Therapy Center and Spa, Christina spends weekdays relieving people of pain, teaching customers to relax and doing what she loves.

She welcomes customers into her office — a room with covered windows, dim lighting and meditative music flowing from the radio in the corner. Her long hair pulled back and a lotion bottle on her hip, she questions customers about their history and their needs.

Christina says massage helps people cure a variety of ailments and conditions including digestive problems, stress, headaches, anxiety and aids in weight loss.

“The results we have gotten with clients have been amazing,” she says.

The therapist recalls a customer who suffered from chronic side pain. Through weekly visits, Sandy Peeler’s pain subsided.

“I started seeing Christina in August once a week and by November I was pain free,” Peeler said.

The weekly visits had an added benefit.

“Not only had Christina helped my pain, she had reduced my abdominal scar.”

Christina says the results are no accident.

“It’s not called The Healing Touch for nothing,” she says smiling.

The therapist realizes that some people are skeptical about massage therapy, but she has believed in its effects for years.

“I’ve done massage therapy since I was a little girl, going up behind aunts, uncles and teachers.”

But it was her mother who convinced her to make a career out of her passion. Suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, Christina’s mother would often turn to her for pain relief.

“I decided from that day forward that I wanted to be a massage therapist.”

After studying for a year at the Pennsylvania School of Muscle Therapy, Stone moved to Lincolnton to be with her high school sweetheart and to start a business.

Her relationship, and her business have prospered. She is now married to Jay Stone, and her business continues to grow — she has brought another massage therapist on board and offers spa and styling services.

“This isn’t just a place of business,” she says. “This is a family working together. It makes it real nice.”

Christina says no one is too young or old to benefit from massage. Her oldest customer is 83, and her youngest, a newborn.

“It’s kind of rewarding working on a newborn,” she says.

Massaging a baby can relieve them of digestive problems and anxiety, she says, and can often teach the mother a few tricks at soothing her child.

When she goes home at the end of the day, Christina feels rewarded.

“To think I make such an impact in people’s lives — it’s amazing.”
