Lois Cooke

79 years old going on 20

By AMY WADSWORTH, LTN Staff Writer

Lois Cooke, 79, is as active as a 20-year-old.

Her day starts out at 6:30 a.m. when she does her work-out routine in the kitchen for an hour.

“I just do it all by myself,” Cooke said. “I put the radio on and just move in time with the music.”

Cooke has had three spinal fusion surgeries, so keeping fit is important to her.

“I try to walk two miles a day,” she said. “I want to stay limbered up.”

Having a busy social life is also important to Cooke. Since her husband of 61 years passed away 18 months ago, she likes to stay involved with the community.

“I couldn’t cope if I was not active,” she said. “It gets lonely here on the weekends.”

Cooke sings in five choirs in surrounding areas. She sings two Saturday nights a month in the Mecklenburg County Singers and the Lincoln County Singers. She also sings with the Golden Voices in Boger City, which meet once a week, and she sings in the Casar community choir, once a month. She also sings in her own church, Hull’s Grove Baptist Church, Wednesday and Sunday.

“My husband was the director of churches for 50 years,” she said. “We used to sing together, singing has been our life.”

When Cooke is not working out or singing, she is usually in the garden or canning.

Her garden is full of cucumbers, tomatoes, corn, beats and bell peppers.

She also has blackberries, a walnut tree, grapevines, pear trees, fig trees and peach trees.

Cooke harvests the fruits of her labor to use for canning.

“I love to can,” she said. “I can so much, I never have to go to the store except to get the essentials.”

Cooke also enjoys selling strawberries.

“I sold 1,233 buckets one time,” she said. “I load up my truck and go sell them on the side of the road.”

Cooke is involved in the singles group and care ministry with her church, which both meet once a month.

She still mows her own lawn once a week and keeps her own house.

“I want to stay here as long as I can,” Cooke said. “When it comes to something else, I’ll go to a home somewhere.”

Cooke is a faithful woman.

“I thank the Lord everyday for allowing me to be able to maintain my home and garden,” she said. “I am so thankful.”
