Black belt dad, country living fan
By JACOB RUDOLPH, LTN Staff Writer
Buddy Sigmon gets a real kick out of living in quiet, west Lincoln County.
“Listen to this … ,” Sigmon, 50, said, craning his neck toward the sky. “You don’t hear anything, do you?”
The tranquillity in the air around his back yard is what keeps him in the western part of the county, where he once helped his uncle on the family dairy farm. But there’s something else
in his backyard that he loves just as much as the quiet — a one-room karate studio.
On Monday and Thursday nights, the normally hushed landscape near Alf Hoover Road is replaced with the synthetic soundtrack from Beverly Hills Cop — Axel’s Theme blares as Sigmon leads
his students through the techniques of Tang Su Do-style karate.
“Karate takes discipline and a commitment,” Sigmon said. “It is something that I love to do and I love to teach.”
The black-belted Sigmon has been teaching karate for 17 years; he’s been teaching from Sigmon Karate Studio for nine. He first took up karate immediately after his daughter was born 20
years ago. He hasn’t stopped since.
“Ginger was born on October 20, I started lessons on November 1,” he said. “It sky-rocketed from there.”
But karate is not all Sigmon enjoys. He owns acreage near Lenoir, where he loves to go deer hunting. He also enjoys hiking.
Sigmon has worked for Bradington-Young in Cherryville for 24 years. He was recently promoted to final inspector.
He has a lot of relatives in west Lincoln, which is part of the appeal, he said. It is a real family-oriented community, where people respect one another.
“If you come home and your house has been broken into, you know whoever did it isn’t from around here or they’re new here, because you don’t rob family,” Sigmon said. “West Lincoln
people are country people, but they’re proud people, with respect.”
