Veterans announce scholarship winners

Published May 28, 2003

Dr. Bob Wise, Chairman of Scholarship Committee of the General Robert F. Hoke/Col. William J. Hoke Camp 1616, Sons of Confederate Veterans has announced this year’s scholarship winners.

The scholarships are given in memory of the late Judge John R. Friday of Lincolnton, distinguished jurist, historian, and author, to a worthy student in each of our county high schools.

Judge Friday was a charter member of Camp 1616 and was member of the original scholarship committee.

The recipient from West Lincoln High School is Mandy Leigh Sanford, daughter of Linda and Tim Biggerstaff of Lawndale. She will attend the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where she will pursue a degree in nursing.

The recipient from Lincolnton High School is Sara Ann Funderburk, daughter of Buddy and Jean Funderburk of Lincolnton. She will attend Campbell University in the fall to pursue a degree in mass communications (print media-journalism).

The recipient from East Lincoln High School is Matthew Lee McIntosh, son of Ellis and Linda McIntosh of Denver. He will attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill this fall.

The sons of Confederate Veterans have granted over $11,000 in scholarship funds to Lincoln County Students.
