Seniors celebrate new careers, opportunities

May 24, 2002 - A single mother of five children, Pat Yarbrough makes ends meet.

When her children were young, she worked at JP Stevens manufacturing plant. It wasn’t necessarily her choice of careers, but it put food on the table.

Ebbie Jo Ruff talks to workers and employers Wednesday at Experience Works 25th anniversary celebration. The program affects senior workers and the non-profit agencies who employ them, providing on the job training.

‘Bad Girl’ deemed ultimate survivor

May 24, 2002 - When Lincolnton’s Barbi Martin learned she had been selected to spend eight days competing in Survive Our Island 2002 — Charlotte radio station KISS95.1’s take-off on the popular “Survivor” TV show — she opted for a simple strategy: be herself.

“I planned on being nice, staying out of the drama — which is what I did.”

May 17, 2002 - GASTONIA — They are portals to distant galaxies, passages to the bowels of the earth  — the Schiele Museum of Natural History’s hallways lead visitors on voyages to the stars and expeditions through bear-inhabited caves.

May 3, 2002 - A slow economic year has not dampened local enthusiasm for Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society’s largest annual fundraiser.

“I know its been a tough year but the teams are coming forward. They’re going to raise the money,” said Susan Beaver, local team recruitment chairwoman.

May 3, 2002 - Anne Beam Anthony, 65, knew she would beat breast cancer from the moment she was diagnosed.

“I felt from the beginning this was not going to defeat me.”

Through a lumpectomy and radiation, she is now cancer free.

Couple climbs uphill road to survivors lap

May 3, 2002 - Malcolm “Moose” Gantt will lead the first lap of survivors tonight with his wife, Wanda Gantt.

Moose, who has dedicated his life to serving others as a member of the Lincoln County Lifesaving Crew, was chosen by captains of the participating Relay for Life teams to be the honorary chairman.

Malcolm "Moose" Gantt's family has been fighting an ongoing battle with cancer. He will lead the survivors lap tonight as honorary chairman of Lincolnton's Relay for Life.

Student art show to fill Cultural Center gallery

May 1, 2002 - Big colorful bug paintings and scenic landscapes will decorate the Lincoln Cultural Center in May.

The Lincoln County Student Art Show, sponsored by the Lincoln Arts Council and the Lincoln County Schools,  will be on display May 5-15, on the first and second floors of the Cultural Center.
