Arts Council hosts literary competition

The Lincoln Arts Council held an awards ceremony, reading and reception for the 17th Annual Flo Robinson Literary Competition Thursday, April 10 at 7 p.m.

The event was held in the Timken Performance Hall of the Lincoln Cultural Center.

Barrie Howard was master of ceremonies, and Robert Lineberger, trustee of the Flo Robinson Trust, was the guest speaker.

Dr. Elaine Jenkins, assistant superintendent of schools-curriculum presented the awards to the winners.

Prize money and certificates were presented. The 2003 competition drew over 300 poetry and prose entries in four categories: Elementary school (grades 3-5); Middle school(grades 6-8); High school (grades 9-12); and adult (18-years-old and older).

The following is a list of winners:

Adult Category

Prose — Alison W. Scott, Denver, first place; Judy Sackett, Crouse, second place; Robert Lineberger, Lincolnton, third place; Patricia Hull, Lincolnton, honorable mention

Poetry — Robert Lineberger, Lincolnton, first place; Jean Skibo, Cherryville, second place; Melany Dawn Crouse, Lincolnton, third place

High School Category

Prose — Sarah Broome, West Lincoln, first place; Brittany Anne Seagle, West Lincoln, second place; Lily Tallent, West Lincoln, third place; Jana Jonas, Carrie Freeman, and Maggie Heafner, West Lincoln, honorable mention

Poetry — Jeron Mosteller, West Lincoln, first place; Sarah Bjork, West Lincoln, second place; Heather Lanier, West Lincoln, third place; Seth Barkley, West Lincoln, honorable mention

Middle School Category

Prose — Joseph Morton, Lincolnton Middle, first place; Taylor Beam, Lincolnton Middle, second place; Olivia Reid, West Lincoln Middle, third place; Julianna Sehy, West Lincoln Middle, honorable metion

Poetry — Elizabeth Beaver, West Lincoln Middle, firt place; Julianna Sehy, West Lincoln Middle, second place; Ashley Baker, Lincolnton Middle, third place; Laura McBryde, West Lincoln Middle, honorable mention

Elementary School Category

Prose — Victoria Beam, Love Memorial, first place; Devin Jones, Iron Station, second place; Naomi Garcia, Love Memorial, third place; Erika Floyd, Love Memorial, honorable mention

Poetry — Valerie Spalding, Union, first place; Samantha E. Smith, North Brook, second place; Tyler James Allen, North Brook, third place; Shasta Short, North Brook, honorable mention

Judges for the competition were as follows:

Ruth Moose of Pittsboro, a lecturer in the Creative Writing Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She judged the high school and adult categories.

Mesa Summer of Durham, a graduate of State University of New York at Binghamton, where she received her Masters degree in Literature. She judged Middle School categories.

Luli Gray of Chapel Hill, a member of the North Carolina Writers’ Network in Carrboro.  She judged the Elementary School categories.
