‘Secret Sound’ no mystery to lucky listener

On Monday, March 31, Paul Schadt and Sarah Waters, morning hosts on Kat Country, were looking for caller 96 and the answer to the “Secret Sound.”

“I was dialing. I was caller 54,” said Nancy Tester of Lincolnton. “I kept dialing.”

Sarah announced over the radio that she was on caller 92. Nancy got through.

“I just held on and got shaky,” Nancy says. “Then I screamed. I knew I had it.”

Nancy had been listening to WKKT 96.9 Kat Country all month. She had listened to the clues and was ready to make her guess at the secret sound.

The answer — Paul Schadt’s wedding ring and a 1999 quarter being shaken in a blue coffee cup with the words “U.S. Marshals” written on it.

Nancy gave the right answer and won the “Secret Sound” contest.

The first thing Nancy did after winning, was leave a message on her daughter’s cell phone. She started screaming into the phone “I won. I won.”

“I scared her to death,” Nancy laughs.

Nancy’s detection skills — and good hearing — earned her two “Megatickets” that include passes to five country concerts: Kenny Chesney, Brooks & Dunn, Alabama, Toby Keith and Travis Tritt; a meet and greet with Winston Cup champion Jeff Gordon; a $500 gift certificate to Village Jewelers in Kannapolis; dinner at Chucky T’s BBQ at Lake Norman; a limousine ride; a Nintendo Game Cube; and a Diamond Rio tour jacket.

Nancy couldn’t decide who was more excited, her or her 17-year-old daughter, Krystle.

“She wanted those concert tickets bad,” Nancy says.

Nancy says she and her daughter have won tickets to country music concerts before. And they always go together.

They’re looking forward to their upcoming concerts, Nancy says. And they’ve already begun enjoying their gifts. Krystle has broken into the Nintendo, and they went on a jewelry shopping spree Saturday.

“It took me three hours to decide what I was going to get,” Nancy says.

She bought an anniversary ring for herself and a bracelet for Krystle.

Nancy and Krystle listened to the contest each day for almost a month. Clues were given each day.

While she has enjoyed her prizes, Nancy says she doesn’t listen to Kat Country solely for the contests.

“I’ve listened to Paul Schadt for 17 years. I’ll keep on listening to him.”
