Denver native crowned Mrs. North Carolina

By DIANE TURBYFILL, LTN Staff Writer

The night she was crowned, she celebrated her victory with a Pumpkin Center family get together.

Wendy Galle is the new Mrs. North Carolina.

It’s not as if she had nothing else to do.

The 31-year-old’s calendar is packed. Galle runs a construction business, teaches aerobics and spends time with husband, Fred Galle. But with a weekend to spare, she thought she’d try pageant competition.

Last Saturday Galle awoke at 5 a.m. She scurried around her Sherrills Ford home preparing for the day-long competition in Charlotte. By 4:30 that afternoon she had been crowned 2002 Mrs. North Carolina.

But her preparation to win the title had begun months earlier.

Galle began working out at Fit Dimension in Denver, where she teaches aerobics, and started reading up on current events.

The title-hopeful headed to Charlotte with full support.

“I had a big cheering section,” she says.

Galle’s family, aerobics students and sponsors all came to the pageant at the Sheraton.

After several interviews and swimsuit and evening gown competition among the 10 contestants, Galle was crowned.

Owner and CEO of Galle Development and Construction, Galle felt good about her chances.

“I was very confident. I tried to give it 120 percent.”

Pageant contestants provide an application to organizers and pay an entry fee.

For her efforts, Galle has won a two week trip to the national competition in Honolul. The Mrs. America Pageant will be televised, but dates and times have not yet been announced.

This will be Galle’s second two-week trip to Hawaii. She and her husband of three years went to the island for their honeymoon.

Galle hopes her husband will get more of a break than he did the day of the state pageant.

“My husband was so wonderful. He was my chauffeur, my go-fer, my chef and my cameraman.”

The new queen says her husband has been a motivator to her in life and in the competition.

After being crowned Saturday, the two went out for a celebration dinner and then to Pumpkin Center to celebrate with family.

Galle is grew up in the Denver/Pumpkin Center community. She attended East Lincoln High School before earning her bachelor of science in communication from Western Carolina University.

She has also been seen on stage, competing in the Miss Lincoln County Pageant when she was in high school. Though she wasn’t crowned, she was named Miss Congeniality. She has also held the Miss Mount Holly and Americas Cover Miss titles.

Galle believes her confidence helped her win Saturday’s pageant. In return, she hopes to visit area schools and promote self-esteem.

“I think it’s very important that children feel good about themselves.”

She says increasing children’s self esteem will help combat the problem of childhood obesity.

Since being crowned, Galle’s life has become more hectic than ever.

“The phone rang off the hook from 10:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday.”

Galle expects the frenzy to die down over the next couple of weeks, but her determination will not. She plans to do her best to take the title and go on to compete for Mrs. World.

The last two Mrs. World winners were Mrs. Americas.

“Hopefully that tradition,” she says, “will keep going forward.”
