Asthma Splashout offers family fun and education
By DIANE TURBYFILL, LTN Staff Writer
April 26, 2002 - Children and their parents can dive into the subject of asthma in May at the YMCA.
The 2002 Asthma Splashout will be held May 11. Organizers hope to educate the public, and to have fun.
GlaxoSmith Kline and the local Be Good to Your Lungs committee with the Lincoln Partnership for Health will host the event for the second year.
“We had a really good turn out last year,” says Belinda Bumgarner, health educator with the Lincoln County Health Department.
Families who attend the free seminar will learn about the symptoms and affects of asthma. They will also be told of the newest updates in asthma research and
learn helpful practices to keep the ailment at bay.
“Childhood asthma is on the rise substantially, and we think that more education is needed,” says Bumgarner.
Amy Chilcote, Cooperative Extension agent and committee member, says childhood asthma is one of the main reasons children miss multiple days of school.
“We want to decrease the number of asthma attacks children suffer from and the number of school days missed,” added Bumgarner.
Once the educational element is complete, refreshments will be served. Children 7-years-old and older, and their families, will have the opportunity to go swimming at the Y pool.
There is no cost for the event but pre-registration is required.
