Contestants sought for teen pageant

March 5, 2003 - Miss Teen All American is seeking North Carolina representatives. Pageant officials are searching the state for representatives to participate in the 25th Annual Miss Teen All American Pageant.

The 2003 Miss Teen All American Pageant will be held July 31 through Aug. 3 at the Hilton Miami Airport & Towers in Miami, Fla.

Fat Tuesday

March 7, 2003 - Members of St. Luke's Episcopal Church gathered for a feast this week in observance of Shrove Tuesday. Bill Bruce played chef for the event. Messiah UMC gets grant to hire nurse

March 7, 2003 - Duke Endowment has awarded a grant of $9,000 to Messiah United Methodist Church to establish a Parish Nurse Program in the church. The Rural Church Division of the Endowment awarded the program funds.

LCHA starts season of competition

March 14, 2003 - The thunderous sound of pounding hooves will return to the Ponderosa this weekend.

The Lincoln County Horseman’s Association will kick off their new season with an NBHA (National Barrel Horse Association) exhibition at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Scholarships to be awarded

March 17, 2003 - Applications are now being accepted for the David Belk Cannon Family Scholarship which each year awards more than $15,000 to Gaston College students.

Anyone enrolling at Gaston College as a full-time curriculum student is eligible to apply for the scholarship, which was established by the late David Belk Cannon through the Community Foundation of Gaston County.

Private David Seth Aderhold completed basic Marine Corp. training at Parris Island, S.C. on March 14. He is a 2002 graduate of West Lincoln High School. After his 24 day leave, he will report to the School of Infantry at Camp Geiger, MCB Camp Lejune, N.C. He is the son of David Aderhold of Salisbury and Dina Parris of Lincolnton. His grandparents are Elsie Smith and Nancy Aderhold, both of Lincolnton and Edward Hayes, Jr. of Iron Station.

Miss Lincoln County 1997 wins Mrs. N.C.

March 21, 2003 - Her shiny, blonde hair sways as she gestures with her hands, speaking enthusiastically about pageantry.

Shannon Cornwell Devine, 28, returned to the pageant circuit Saturday, March 8 after a four-year hiatus and took home the title.

Shannon Cornwell Devine, Miss Lincoln County 1997, recently won the title of Mrs. North Carolina. She says returning to the pageantry circuit at the age of 28 has been rewarding. Robin Jenkins of Simply Elegant provided Devine with a wardrobe for the competition and plans to assist her with the Mrs. America Pageant. (LTN photo by Diane Turbyfill)

LINC volunteers

March 21, 2003 - Tuesdays feel like Sundays to Paul and Geneva Engle.

That’s when the couple heads to Lincoln Medical Center to pack lunches for shut-ins in the LINC Meals program.

“It’s like going to church and being with your friends,” Paul Engle says.

Celebrating a century

West Lincoln women turn 100

March 28, 2003 - Clutching a walker, Mary Royster climbs the hill in front of her old friend’s west Lincoln home. She is soon joined on the front porch by Mittie Hauss.

The modest, wooden, white house sits across N.C. 182 from where Mittie grew up. She tells of how her grandfather built the large home across the street using homemade bricks.

Schools balance high enrollment, overcrowding issues

March 28, 2003 - REEPSVILLE — Kim Beam and a group of students were hard at work Monday afternoon in the auditorium at Union Elementary School, but they weren’t on stage to rehearse a play.

Kim Beam has to teach her art classes at Union Elementary School in the auditorium on Mondays. When she is there on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Beam travels from classroom to classroom as a result of overcrowded conditions at the school.  (LTN photo by Jeremy Ashton)

It’s one of the characteristics that attracts new residents to the area, said Debbie Willis, real estate broker with Century 21 Town & Country Realty.

“The west Lincoln area is so much more open,” Willis said. “There’s a friendliness, togetherness in west Lincoln.”

Fireman of the Year

March 28, 2003 - Howard's Creek Volunteer Fire Department chief Kevin Heavner was recognized as 2002 Fireman of the Year last Tues-day. Heavner was presented a plaque by Darrell Ledbetter, president of the Lincoln Fire-fighters' Association.
