Local News - March 2003

Let there be light at WLHS

TERRANCE THOMAS, LTN Staff Writer

March 28, 2003 - VALE — There’s something West Lincoln High School baseball fans would love to hear at night:

Play ball!

Rebels’ fans will be able to watch their favorite teams play after dark within a couple of weeks.

“The (light) posts are up,” said West baseball coach Allan Chapman. “We just have got to get them wired. It should be ready next week.”

The softball fields should be ready soon, too.

Chapman helped lead a joint effort from his school principal Debra Morris and athletic director Wayne Navey, the boosters, Lincoln County Schools and the community to get pledges for the lights project. Around $10,000 of pledges was secured a month ago.

Rutherford Electric will install the lights.

Having lights will offer many benefits to West Lincoln.

Right away, the baseball teams can play full games without worrying about darkness. The JV team will get to play all seven-inning games, too.

And later games should allow more fans to attend games.

The games now start as early as 4 p.m. when most adults are still working. A later start time will them a chance to go home, relax, get the kids and go to the ballpark.

More fans, means more money — and programs — for the schools’ athletic department.

“It would allow us to host tournaments, an opportunity to do more with the fields such as to hold summer camps,” said Chapman.
