Messiah UMC gets grant to hire nurse

From staff reports

March 7, 2003 - Duke Endowment has awarded a grant of $9,000 to Messiah United Methodist Church to establish a Parish Nurse Program in the church. The Rural Church Division of the Endowment awarded the program funds.

Bethlehem United Methodist Church and Bess Chapel United Methodist Church are in partnership with Messiah in the program. Lisa Cole of Vale is the new nurse.

The church collaborated with a number of area service agencies to help establish the task force for planning.

Local agencies included the Lincoln Medical Center, which has also awarded $5,000 for the project. Other agencies involved in the development are the Lincoln County Agent, NC State, Lincoln County Social Services, The Lincoln County Health Department, and Christian Ministry of Lincoln County, and the Gastonia District of the United Methodist Church.

The Mission Society of the Gastonia District awarded a grant of $2000 to the program.

The project is titled: The West Lincoln Health Ministry Project: Parish Nurse Program. Planning group members heard representatives from both the Catawba Hospital Parish Nurse Program and the Ashe County Parish Nurse Program, and read other paradigms of the whole-health, faith-based care in the church.

Parish nursing provides organization and development for a team of volunteer nurses and support volunteers to provide programs and services of medical interest in the church and community.

The program will provide health care screenings such as blood pressure checks, blood sugar checks, skin cancer checks, stroke screenings, knowledge and linking with supportive services for optimum physical and spiritual health in life.

The Parish Nurse is trained in medical and spiritual care to provide information, a medical presence, and linking services with members of the local congregation and community. It is a growing local service nationwide, and is understandably helpful in outlying, rural areas.

Messiah Church plans to have a nurse in place by March of 2003.
