March 22, 2002 - Callie was 15 when she discovered she was pregnant.
Through support from her family and members of the community, she is now raising her 2-year-old son, Logan. Callie, now 17, is a senior at West
Lincoln High School. Her son attends Long Shoals Wesleyan Academy while she is at school.

Volunteers help cancer patients ‘Look Good’

March 22, 2002 - Tina Malphrus of Denver is looking to start a Look Good, Feel Better program at Denver
Baptist Church.
Look Good, Feel Better is a nationwide program. Trained cosmetologists teach women, stricken with cancer and the debilitating side effects, how to cope with
skin changes and hair loss.

Reading leads to charity Catawba Springs

March 20, 2002 - Students at Catawba Springs Elementary School recently learned a lesson in
charity.
“It started as a story time idea,” Media Specialist Carla Detter says.
Detter was reading the book “Stone Soup” to a group of kindergarten and first-graders. The Marcia Brown children’s book tells the story of an
elderly lady who winds up sharing a pot of soup with a poor, hungry man.

BPW to award ‘Working Woman’s Scholarship’

March 20, 2002 - The Lincolnton Business and Professional Women’s Organization (BPW/Lincolnton) has
established a “Working Woman’s Scholarship” to be awarded annually to aid a local working woman.
During the past year an anonymous donation was designated for scholarship purposes. The BPW voted to set this fund up as a “Working Woman’s Scholarship” which
would aid an older woman — possibly a single mother, a reentry working woman, or anyone finding themselves needing to receive additional education for career/work purposes.

Association announces 2002-03 concert lineup

March 13, 2002 - The Lincoln County Concert Association is now conducting its annual membership drive and
announces its concert lineup for the 2002-2003 season.
In November, Mr. Jack Daniel’s Original Silver Comet Band will take the stage at the Citizens Center for an evening of time travel — back to the turn of the
last century, when a community concert band would regularly serenade citizens in the park.

Lions offer scholarships

March 13, 2002 - The Lincolnton Lions Club is seeking two good students.
The local organization is now accepting applications for two $500 scholarships for the 2002 Benjamin Roe College Scholarship.
The purpose of the Benjamin Roe College Scholarship is to assist first-year college students in obtaining a degree at any accredited college or university, in
any field, with priority given to the medical field.

March 13, 2002 - Friends and family circled around Friday to watch Eunice Whitener blow out the candles on her cake.
Though the large sheet cake had only three candles, the crowd celebrated the Vale native’s 100th birthday.
And she enjoyed all of the flowers, gifts, kisses and hugs from her visitors.

March 8, 2002 - Two ordained ministers are offering counseling and guidance in Lincoln County.
Through the Methodist Counseling and Consultation Services, Rev. Earl Freeman and Rev. Diane Wales are seeing patients at First United Methodist
Church.
