Troupe educates students through music, dance, art

February 7, 2003 - Students gazed at the performers. They repeated each foreign word and began clapping as the drumbeat echoed through the gymnasium.

Little Theatre plans to revisit the ’70s

February 7, 2003 - The Cherryville Little Theatre will celebrate its patrons, and the 70s, Saturday, Feb. 15.

Members of the community theater group will host their annual Patrons Party beginning at 8 p.m. at the Cherryville Country Club.

East Lincoln team completes successful starting season

February 14, 2003 - Music thumping loudly in the cafeteria is joined by the sound of rhythmic clapping and stomping. The beats fill the halls each Tuesday and Friday after classes have been dismissed.

Snow Day?

February 21, 2003 -  The sun came out Tuesday afternoon melting away most of the snow and ice left by Sunday's storm. With school canceled, children were able to spend the afternoon outside. February 21, 2003 - The Iron Station Elementary School Student Nutritional Advisory Council (NAC) had a penny drive in January to raise money to buy food and school supplies for low income families in Brazil. Fireman of the Year

February 21, 2003 - North 321 Volunteer Fire De-partment held its annual banquet on Jan. 11. Lieutenant Dwight Hoyle received a plaque from Chief Mike Boyles after being presented with the Fireman of the Year award at the annual banquet. This award was voted on by his fellow firefighters for his outstanding service to the department during the year.

Regional Art Competition to kick off in March

February 21, 2003 - The Lincoln Cultural Center and the Lincoln Arts Council’s Annual Regional Art Show will be receiving art for the juried show on March 17 and 18.

The juried art competition is in its 10th year. It provides an opportunity for artists in a seven-county area encompassing Burke, Catawba, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln and Mecklenburg counties.

February 28, 2003 - VALE — The banner immediately catches the eye of anyone who walks in the front door of Union Elementary School.

The sign boldly proclaims in large blue lettering that Union is one of “North Carolina’s 25 Most Improved K-8 Schools.”

The Evolution of Pottery

February 28, 2003 - VALE — There’s something rare and wonderful in the soil of western Lincoln County.

For centuries it’s been used to shape functional works of art; now it will be used to mold minds.

Dwayne Craig, Burlon Craig's grandson and also a fulltime potter, and his fa-ther Donald Craig reminisce in the shed where the late master potter once worked. Donald Craig has donated a piece of his father's pottery to be raffled at the festival. May 17 will be proclaimed as "Burlon Craig Day" at a 9:30 a.m. ceremony, prior to the opening of "The Evolu-tion of Pottery" festival at 10 a.m. (LTN photo by Jenny Walling)

Gladys Sain

West elder; wild child?

February 28, 2003 - “The Matriarch of Cat Square” is both elder stateswoman and wild child.

Gladys Sain has lived on Saintown Road all her life. She loves west Lincoln and especially Cat Square, despite the changes she has witnessed in her 72 years there.
