Light to be shed on WLHS field

TERRANCE THOMAS, LTN Staff Writer

February 28, 2003 - VALE — The baseball and softball fields at West Lincoln High School will get lights by season’s end.

It took a joint effort from West Lincoln, the West Lincoln Booster Club, Lincoln County Schools and the community.

“The majority of the money will come from the county through the athletic department and the rest through pledges from the community,” said head baseball coach  Allen Chapman. “We have a committee established that has secured $10,000 from pledges.

“It’s well on its way. We’ll buy the equipment and Rutherford Electric will install it. We’re very grateful of them.”

Chapman said in his eight years at the school not having lights has cost West Lincoln.

Few people are able to attend games due to the 4 p.m. start and colleges which have shown interest in a player have had time conflicts with their own game times.

During one game at West, the Rebels came back to tie the game but darkness forced the game to end in a tie.

Darkness postponed a game last season against Fred. T. Foard. The teams had to finish the game at Foard before their regular game at Foard.

There are other advantages to having lights, said Chapman.

“It would generate more money for our athletic department. It would allow us to host tournaments, an opportunity to do more with the fields such as summer camps.”

West school officials including principal Debra Morris and athletic director Wayne Navey were instrumental in the project.

“It’s something everybody is happy about,” Morris said. “More parents can come to the games. We’ll have bigger crowds.”
