Gladys Sain
West elder; wild child?
By JACOB RUDOLPH, LTN Staff Writer
February 28, 2003 - “The Matriarch of Cat Square” is both elder stateswoman and wild child.
Gladys Sain has lived on Saintown Road all her life. She loves west Lincoln and especially Cat Square, despite the changes she has witnessed in her 72 years
there.
“I don’t know anybody anymore,” Sain said of her growing community. “I’m the old generation now, and there’s not very many that’s left.”
As a child, Sain and her siblings loved to roam the west Lincoln hills.
Her father, E.F. Sain owned the locally-famous Sain and Sain store, which used to grace Cat Square. She fondly remembers Saturdays at the store, watching
television with her neighbors.
Sain is credited with being one of the organizers of the Cat Square parade — a Christmas event in its 30th year.
“The parade is the best thing we have,” Sain said.
She has served three terms as Cat Square mayor — a post she was honored to hold, but does not want again.
“I don’t want to run (for mayor) again, because you miss the whole parade,” Sain said.
Her friends say she is young at heart, able to connect with younger generations.
At 60 she got her first tattoo, a colorful ladybug, which crawls across her left collarbone. It wasn’t painful, it just stung a little, she said.
“I have high blood sugar, or I’d get another one,” Sain laughed, pointing to a stuffed Tasmanian Devil character in her kitchen. “I’d get Taz on my ankle.”
Sain is an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
She loves to read suspense thrillers. Her shelves are stacked with Mary Higgins Clark and Dean Koontz novels. She also enjoys Stephen King, although, “he’s not
the writer he used to be,” she said.
Horror movies are her favorites, although she loves watching classics, such as “Gone With the Wind” and “The Ten Commandments.”
The silver-haired lady with a friendly smile said she is west Lincoln through and through. Although the ruralness of the area would be a deterrent for most, it
is what keeps Sain in west Lincoln; on Saintown Road; in Cat Square.
“I love the peace,” Sain said. “I can get out and holler as loud as I want to.”
