4-H’ers attend National 4-H Congress

Published January 14, 2004

Two Lincoln County 4-H members attended the 79th National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, Ga.

National 4-H Congress is attended by top 4-H members from all 50 of the United States and territories annually.

Stephanie Ledford, 15, daughter of Rex and Cynthia Ledford of Hickory, received the trip for her accomplishments in the Environmental Science 4-H Program Area.

Casey Snyder, 16, son of Donald and Elizabeth Snyder of Maiden, received the trip for his accomplishments in the Forestry 4-H Program Area.

Ledford and Snyder participated in a statewide competition consisting of an application, resume and professional interview covering their achievement in their 4-H projects, leadership, citizenship and community service.

Twenty 4-H’ers from North Carolina were selected to attend the National 4-H Congress.

Alligators, marshes, rain forests, acid rain, global warming, smog, the Global Village were all parts of the National 4-H Congress. The theme — Growing into the Future — focused on environmental awareness.

During the Congress, members heard from nationally renown speakers including Ericka Dunlap, 2004 Miss America. They participated in a community service project with Habitat for Humanity to build a house for a low-income family in Atlanta.

Workshops focused on leadership development, cultural diversity and youth empowerment.

Tours included Centennial Olympic Park, the World of Coca-Cola, CNN Center, the Carter Presidential Library and the Martin Luther King Center. The trip was all expense-paid by donors to the North Carolina 4-H Development Fund.
