Lions collect glasses and hearing aids
January 31, 2003 - The Lions Clubs for the Lions Club International Recycle for Sight & Hearing Project are collecting eye glasses.
Throughout the year, Lincoln and Gaston County Lions Clubs are collecting useable eyeglasses and hearing aides. However, during the summer and fall season,
they are making a concerted effort to educate the general public, medical community, church, and school groups about their need.
“One of the most frequently asked questions concerning the Lions Club recycling eyeglasses program is why they are only distributed overseas to developing
countries,” said Lion Jan Johnson, Secretary of the Lincolnton Lions Club. “It is due to state and federal public health laws preventing the redistribution of used prescription eye wear in the U.S.”
A pair of eyeglasses can help an adult maintain employment or a child remain in school. Since so many developing countries whose citizens are recipients of the
Lions Recycle for Sight Program reside close to the Equator, they are more susceptible to cataracts and other eye diseases. For this reason, there is a great demand for recyclable prescription and non-prescription
sunglasses and children’s eyeglasses
Recycling eyeglasses and hearing aides is only one way that the Lions of Lincoln and Gaston County serve the blind, visually and hearing impaired of their
communities.
Eyeglasses and hearing aids may be dropped off at the following locations:
Carolina Eye Care & Associates, Cherryville Eye Center, Dr. Robert Gazdeck, Graystone Ophthalmology Associates, Lincoln Eye Center, The Vision Center at
Wal-Mart, The Drug Store, Bi-Lo Pharmacy, Lincoln Charter Schools, Lincoln County Senior Center, Lincoln County Co-Operative Extension Service, Lincoln Medical Center, Saint John’s Lutheran Church, and First
Methodist Church.
