A gift of life: Siblings celebrate special bond

Jan. 25, 2002 - With gifts, cards and flowers Micky Cook and Deb Harkey celebrated their 20th anniversary last month.

The brother and sister mark Dec. 9th on their calendars each year, a reminder of the day in 1982 when Harkey gave an amazing gift to Cook — a kidney.

Deb Harkey and Micky Cook look at letters, cards and reports from when they had surgery 20 years ago. Both remember fondly the day Harkey extended her brother's life by donating a kidney.

4-H’ers awarded during Achievement Night

Jan. 25, 2002 - Youth were recognized recently for completing 109 4-H project records and over 50 project exhibits during the annual 4-H Achievement Program.

Special recognition was given for outstanding leadership and achievement.

Jan. 18, 2002 - Students and staff at Union Elementary School celebrated the 100th day of school Thursday. Classes made snacks and crafts and played games relating to the number 100. Lincoln Arts Council to host annual literary competition

Jan. 16, 2002 - The Lincoln Arts Council is preparing for its annual Flo Robinson Literary Competition.

The trustees of Miss Robinson’s estate established the competition to memorialize her lifelong interest in poetry and prose and to encourage writers in the pursuit of excellence in their craft.

Artist needed for apple T

Jan. 16, 2002 - The Lincoln Arts Council is sponsoring a competition for the design of this year’s Apple Festival T-shirt.

All entries must be received by Friday, Feb. 1 at 5 p.m.

Entries must be mailed to the Lincoln Arts Council, PO Box 45, Lincolnton, NC 28093 or brought to the office in the Lincoln Cultural Center, 403 East Main St.

Denver native becomes published author

Jan. 2, 2002 - Panthy Shipp Anderson never dreamed when she was a young girl growing up in Denver that she would become a published author late in life.

But her experiences as a child of the Great Depression were bound to be told.

“I’ve been around,” the 82-year-old says modestly.

Panthy Shipp Anderson believes life is what you make. The Denver native is now a published author.
