Lincoln Arts Council to host annual literary competition

Jan. 16, 2002 - The Lincoln Arts Council is preparing for its annual Flo Robinson Literary Competition.
The trustees of Miss Robinson’s estate established the competition to memorialize her lifelong interest in poetry and prose and to encourage writers in the
pursuit of excellence in their craft.
The following is a list of rules and regulations for entrants:
One entry per person in both poetry and prose.
Poetry may be on any subject, in any style, free verse, blank verse or rhymed and should be limited to 32 lines or less.
Prose entries may be an essay or short story on any subject, limited to approximately 750 words.
Entries in prose and poetry must be titled, original, unpublished and must never have won a cash award before.
The competition is open to students in public or private schools and to adults.
All entrants must be present or past residents of Lincoln County.
Each school is asked to screen their entries and submit only the best works.
Student entries must come through the schools.
The $500 cash prizes will be awarded as follows:
Elementary Schools — Grades 3-5 — first prize winners will receive $15; second prize will get $10; and third prize will win $5.
Middle Schools — Grades 6-8 — first prize winners will receive $20; second prize will get $15; and third prize will win $10.
High Schools — Grades 9-12 — first prize winners will receive $25; second prize will get $15; and third prize will win $10.
Adult — 18 and over — first prize winners will receive $60; second prize will get $40; and third prize will win $25.
Entries must be submitted by 5 p.m. March 1. Late entries will not be accepted.
When submitting entries, turn in two typewritten, double-spaced copies. One copy must include full name, age, address, phone number, category, and age group and school if student. The second
copy should include only the poem, essay or story.
Mail entries to PO Box 45, Lincolnton, NC 28093-0045 or deliver to the Lincoln Arts Council office inside the Lincoln Cultural Center, 403 East Main St.
An awards ceremony and reading will be held Thursday, April 18 at 7 p.m. for elementary and middle school children and at 8 for high school students and adults in the performance hall of the
Lincoln Cultural Center. A reception will follow the ceremony.
