Catherine Jurgens

LENOIR — Catherine Ione Malick Jurgens, 96, of 502 Mulberry St. SW, died Dec. 28, 2003. A memorial service will be held at a later date at St. Francis Catholic Church. Burial will be in Rose Hills Memorial Park.

Born in Stevens Point, Wis., she was a nurse.

Survivors include one daughter, Carol Gust of Lenoir; two sons, Stanton Jurgens of Lawrenceville, Ill. and Clinton Jurgens of Folsom, Calif.; one brother, Maurice Malick of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters, Ethel Sprague of Stevens Point, Wis. and Virginia Goodwin of Long Beach, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Caldwell County, 902 Kirkwood St., Lenoir, NC 28645.

Pauline Bynum

STANLEY — Pauline Allen Bynum, 77, of Stanley Total Living Center, died Dec. 27, 2003. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Born in Limestone County, Ala., she was a retired nursing assistant.

Survivors include one daughter, Peggy Hooper of Mt. Holly; two sisters, Ruth Hime of Clifton, Tenn. and Lucille Hime of Savannah, Tenn.; four grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; four great great-grandchildren; two step-daughters, Carolyn Johnson of Charlotte and Barbara Reese of Winston-Salem; two step-grandchildren and two step-great great-grandchildren.

 

Fay Melton

CASAR — Fay Robert Melton, 82, of 110 White St., died Dec. 28, 2003. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Corinth Baptist Church, where he was a member. Burial will follow in Casar Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 tonight at Stamey Funeral Home.

Born in Rutherford County, he was retired from PPG Industries and a former member of Casar Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Melton of the home; two step-sons, Bobby Houser of Fallston and Dale Houser of Casar; one brother, Herman Melton of Casar; one sister, Patsy Bingham of Morganton; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

C. Leatherman

VALE — Charlie Hallet Leatherman, 96, of 7275 W. Hwy. 27, died Dec. 28, 2003. Funeral services will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Stamey Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Bess Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Born in Lincoln County, he was a retired self-employed farmer.

Survivors include two sons, Boyd Leatherman of Vale and Bobby Leatherman of Oxford, Fla.; one daughter, Christine Davis of Vale; one brother, Hillard Leatherman of Vale; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren.

Johnie Smith

SHELBY — Johnie Rueben Smith, 75, of 1321 S. Lafayette St., died Dec. 27, 2003. A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. today at ST Enloe Memorial Chapel.

 

J. Baumgardner

Jessie Mae Turner Baumgardner, 84, of 2753 Old Church Lane, died Dec. 28, 2003. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Antioch Baptist Church, where she was a member. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. today at the church.

Born in Cleveland County, she was a homemaker.

Survivors include two sons, Mac Baumgardner and David Baumgardner both of Lincolnton; four daughters, Barbara Jones, Betty Robinson both of Lincolnton, Miriam Woodward of Darlington and Peggy Turner of Conover; two brothers, JD Turner of Rock Hill, SC and Grady Turner of Rockingham; two foster daughters, Kathy Williams and Nina Rome both of Maiden; 16 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Sylvia Long

ASHEVILLE — Sylvia Heard Long, 66, of 1 Miller St., Apt. 129, died Dec. 25, 2003. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hill Street Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Violet Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Darin Poovey

MAIDEN — Darin Lee Poovey, 35, of 1263 Micol Road, died Dec. 26, 2003. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. today at Mays Chapel United Methodist Church, where he was a member. Burial followed in the church cemetery with Masonic Graveside Rites by Lodge #592 and Military rites by American Legion of Maiden.

Born in Catawba County, he was employed by Sherrill Furniture, and served in the National Guard.

Survivors include his wife, Diane Loveless Poovey of the home; two sons, Devin Poovey and Dracen Poovey both of the home; mother and father, Bob and Pat Poovey of Maiden; one brother, Karry Poovey of Maiden; grandmother, Rosa Poovey of Maiden and grandparents, Fred and Betty Dellinger of Newton.

Tiburcia Starritt

Tiburcia Ayala Starritt, 35, of 862 Clark’s Creek Road, died Dec. 23, 2003. Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Born in Orange County, Calif., she was employed by Sprint and was a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Starritt of the home; three daughters, Jacquelyn Ehler, Michaelle Ehler and Bobbi-Joe Starritt all of the home; parents, Jose and Petra Ayala; two brothers and four sisters.

 

Novella Ellis

RUTHERFORD — Novella Thompson Ellis, 93, died Dec. 26, 2003. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Young’s Grove Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:30 until 3 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Mildred Bradshaw

IRON STATION — Mildred C. Bardshaw, 79, of 3389 Halite Lane, died Dec. 26, 2003. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Iron Station Community Cemetery.

Born in Gaston County, she worked in the textile industry.

Survivors include three daughters, Jacky Ward of Belmont, Jewel Whitworth of Mt. Holly and Tiny Costner of Iron Station; one sister, Helen Jones of Iron Station; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

 

 

Donna Godbold

SHELBY — Donna Meadows Godbold, 60, of 138 Columns Circle, died Dec. 26, 2003. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Central United Methodist Church, where she was a member. The family will receive friends after the service in the church fellowship hall.

Born in Spartanburg, SC, she was a homemaker, Co-founder of Caroline Cross Connection and a member of Grace Emmaus Community.

Survivors include her mother, Christine Meadows of Spartanburg, SC; two daughters, Susan Stuppnig of Charlotte and Meg Drum of Rock Hill, SC; one brother, Randall Meadows of Inman, SC; one sister, Sallie Wyatt of Holly Springs, SC and one grandson, Clay Drum.

Bonnie Crowder

GASTONIA — Bonnie Houser Crowder, 88, of Alexandria Place, formerly of Cat Square, died Dec. 27, 2003. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at EF Drum Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Reeps Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Born in Lincoln County, she was a homemaker, former manager of Cat Square Grill and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Nellie Slaughter of Gastonia; one grandson, James Slaughter of Grover; three great-grandsons and one great great-grandchild.

Richard Junker

DENVER — Richard Norman Junker, 59, died Dec. 28, 2003. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Philadelphia Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery, Evergreen Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 tonight at Raymer Funeral Home.

Born in Charlotte, he owned Norman’s Bat and Tackle Shop, Sportsman Lodge, Wher-Rena Boatland, Mountain Creek Marina and Boat Storage.

Survivors include his wife, Maria Flores; four grandchildren, Kelly Junker of Charlotte, Jeffrey Junker of Lake Norman, Ashley Junker and Jonathan Junker both of the home; brothers and sisters, Carolyn Irvin of Cornelius, Harrell Junker of Lake Norman, Rebecca Griffin of Mint Hill, George Junker and Diane Ledford of Huntersville.

Libby Canipe

SHERRILLS FORD — Elizabeth “Libby” White Canipe, 56, of Lineberger Road, died Dec. 24, 2003. Funeral services were at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, where she was a member. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Born in Mooresville, she was a medical transcriber for SIM’s in Charlotte.

Survivors include her husband, James Canipe; two sons, Jeremy Canipe of Charlotte and Brett Canipe of Sherrills Ford; two brothers, Eddie White and Alfred White both of Sherrills Ford and one grandson, Connor Canipe.
