Florence Holtzclaw

CHERRYVILLE — Florence Denton Holtzclaw, 84, of 2748 Clineland Road, died Dec. 11, 2003. Funeral services were at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home. Burial followed at Rose Hill Memorial Park.

Born in Cleveland County, she was retired from Cochran Furniture and a member of Gospel Way Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Manley Holtzclaw of Cherryville; three daughters, Elizabeth Fortenberry, Ponese Holtzclaw and Cathy Eaker all of Cherryville; five grandchildren, Andy Parker, Devin Parker, Emily Parker, Jackie Shull and Johnny Bridges and three great-grandchildren.

Vangie Reep

Vangie Willis Reep, 85, died Dec. 12, 2003. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. today at St. Paul United Methodist Church, where she was a member. Interment followed in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Born in Lincoln County, she was a member of the United Methodist Women and retired from Belk.

Survivors include her husband, Harvey Reep; one son, Tommy Reep of Charlotte; two granddaughters, Suzanne Motley and Cynthia Reep; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles Willis of Vale and one sister, Marie Houser of Hickory.

Memorials may be made to Barbara L. Carter Scholarship Fund, in care of St. Paul United Methodist Church, 2830 Dorchester Place, Charlotte, NC 28209.

Hankins & Whittington- Dilworth Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

 

Jack Yount

CHERRYVILLE — Jack Linard Yount, 78, died Dec. 11, 2003. Funeral services were at 3 p.m. Sunday at Cone Memorial Chapel of Carpenters Funeral Home. Burial followed in City Memorial Cemetery.

Born in Gaston County, he was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church and retired from Carolina Freight Carriers as a driver.

Survivors include his wife, Roberta Howell Yount of Cherryville; three sons, TY Yount of Vale, John Yount and Harold Yount both of Terrell; seven grandchildren, Greg Yount, Traci King, Jeff Yount, Lisa Sigmon, Tammy Stevenson, Melanie Vanderwerken and Tommy Devine and 14 great-grandchildren.

Thomas Browne

CHERRYVILLE — Thomas Banks Browne, 78, of 405 Farris Drive, died Dec. 13, 2003. A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends from 4 until 8 tonight at the home and after services in the Church Fellowship Hall.

Born in Cherryville, he was retired from Beam Construction, served on the Cherryville City Council and was a member of the Men’s Bible Class.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Hiltzheimer Browne; two sons, Frank Browne of Gastonia and Robert Browne of Shelby; four daughters, Mary West of Charlotte, Margaret Browne of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Susan Lewis of Cherryville and Alice Carpenter of Mooresville and seven grandchildren, Katie Browne, Julie Browne, Artie Thomas, Will Lewis, Charles West, David Carpenter and Savannah Carpenter.

Gene Moose

MAIDEN — Eugene “Gene” Kermit Moose, 56, of 6175 Startown Road, died Dec. 13, 2003. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Meadow Ridge Baptist Church, where he was a member. Burial will follow. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 tonight at Burke Mortuary in Maiden.

Born in Catawba County, he was retired from General Electric.

Survivors include his mother, Pauline Moose of Maiden; one son, Kermit Moose of Newton; three daughters, Lisa Travis of Conover, Amy Cantor and Laura Moose both of Newton; one sister, Linda Lail of Newton; two brothers, Edward Moose of Conover and Kenneth Moose of Maiden; three grandson, Wesley Moose, Cody Travis and Cole Travis and two granddaughters, Ashley Wood and Megan Wood.

Gracie Leal

BURLINGTON — Gracie Marie Leatherman Leal, 68, of Edgewood Place, died Dec. 13, 2003. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:45 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Born in Lincoln County, she was a retired teacher from Forsyth County School System.

Survivors include two sons, Jeff Leal of Winston-Salem and Tony Leal of Richmond, Va.; one daughter, Jane Wysor of Elizabeth City; one brother, Frank Leatherman of Raleigh; one sister, Nell Leatherman of Lincolnton and seven grandchildren.

Billy Aiken

NEWTON — Billy Leon Aiken, 76, of 904 East. 22nd St., died Dec. 13, 2003. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Burke Mortuary in Newton. The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Born in Burke County, he was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and a U.S. Navy veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita Mask Aiken of the home; two sons, Bradley Aiken and Robert Aiken both of Newton; one daughter, Katrina Aiken of Virginia; two step-sons, Dale Lail of Newton and Darrell Lail of Lincolnton; one grandson, Toby Aiken; two great-grandchildren and one step-great grandchild.

Nell Heavner

CONOVER — Nell Beam Heavner, 99, of 1st Avenue North, died Dec. 14, 2003. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, where she was a member. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. A private graveside service will be held at Bess Chapel United Methodist Church.

She was a retired elementary school teacher, Sunday School teacher and a member of the United Methodist Women.

Survivors include one daughter, Beverly Heavner of Conover; one granddaughter, Beverly Osborne of Charlotte and two sisters, Elene McMillan of Telford, Tenn. and Eva Summers of Cherryville.

Thelma Hoffman

HICKORY — Thelma Roberta Mosteller Hoffman, 71, died Dec. 13, 2003. Funeral servives will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Viewmont Baptist Church. Entombment will follow in the Mausoleum of Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 tonight at Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home and Crematory.

Born in Lincoln County, she was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her husband, Julius Hoffman, Jr. of the home; two daughters, Kay Hoffman and Susan Gouge both of Hickory; two grandchildren, Brittany Rose and Patrick Gouge; one sister, Willie Yancey of Lawndale and two brothers, John Mosteller of Hickory and Daniel Mosteller of Atlanta, Ga.

Graham Smith

STANLEY — Graham Smith, 74, of 7615 Old Plank Road, died Dec. 10, 2003. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Gold Hill Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Survivors include one son, Graylin Smith of Clover, SC; two sisters, Louise Patton of Charlotte and Mary Mungro of Trenton, NJ and five grandchildren.

Ebony & White’s Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
