Ruth Wentz

Ruth Travis Wentz, 90, of 329 Highland Drive, died Nov. 17, 2003. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Hollybrook Cemetery.

Born in Burke County, she worked in the textile industry.

Survivors include one son, Ralph Wentz of Vale; two daughters, Mary Keener and Patsy Hannon both of Lincolnton; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Boger City Baptist Church, 2201 E. Main St., Lincolnton, NC 28092.

 

Franklin Travis

NEWTON — Franklin Leroy Travis, 81, of 1774 Mt. Olive Church Road, died Nov. 16, 2003. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. today at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, where he was a member. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Born in Catawba County, he was a Staff Sgt. in the Army Air Corp., Gunner and Bombardier during WWII and European Theater, and a member of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen Travis of the home; two daughters, Jane Caldwell of Claremont and Brenda Keller of Washington, DC; one brother, Alvin Travis of Buford, SC; one sister, Vinnalee Yow of Kannapolis; one grandson, Joshua Caldwell and two great-granddaughters.

Memorials may be made to Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, 2103 Mt. Olive Church Road, Newton, NC 28658.

Burke Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

 

Ethel Hester

SHELBY — Ethel Neill Hester, 97, of 401 North Morgan St., died Nov. 18, 2003. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cherryville Missionary Methodist Church, where she was a member. Burial will follow in Cherryville City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 tonight at Carpenters Funeral Home.

Born in Gaston County, she was employed by Rhyne Houser Manufacturing Company and was a self-employed seamstress.

Survivors include one daughter-in-law, Bernice Hester of Shelby; two grandchildren, Janet Hardin and William Hardin and two great-grandchildren.

Raymond Weaver

Raymond Charles Weaver, 53, of 4052 Stoney Creek Drive, died Nov. 18, 2003. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 until 1:45 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Born in Allegheny, Penn., he was a process engineer for Hayward Pools and a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Weaver of the home; two sons, Mark Kuykendall and Michael Kuykendall both of Claremont; three daughters, Melanie Weaver of Charlotte, Teana Cantrell of Galax, Va. and Correna Stachiw of Surprise, Az.; one step-son, Bryan Ballard of Gastonia; two step-daughters, Dana Ray of Gastonia and Christy Burrell of Walhalla, SC; three sisters, Donna Petrisko and Alverda Coyle of Penn. and Darlene Moffat of Denver and 17 grandchildren.

Elizabeth Herndon

Elizabeth Webber Herndon, 83, of 1696 Buck Oak Drive, died Nov. 16, 2003. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Herndon Chapel AME Zion Church, where she was a member. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 tonight at Ebony & White’s Funeral Service.

Born in Cleveland County, she was a retired winder.

Survivors include three sons, Alvin Herndon of Manhattan, NY; Ernest Herndon of Newton and Phillip Herndon of Lincolnton; four daughters, Elizabeth Rutherford, Ruth Farley, Margaret Smith and Mildred Phelps all of Lincolnton; two sisters, Pearl Roseboro of Lincolnton and Daisy Simms of Gastonia; one brother, Albert Webber of Lincolnton; 18 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild.

 

Myrtle Hooper

Myrtle Ray Hooper, 98, of 817 E. Pine St., died Nov. 18, 2003.

Arrangements are incomplete at Ebony & White’s Funeral Service.

 

Mary Hass

NEWTON — Mary Catherine Shook Hass, 85, of 55 South Hildebran Avenue, died Nov. 19, 2003. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Burke Mortuary Chapel in Newton. Burial will follow in Old St. Paul Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Born in Catawba County, she was of Lutheran faith.

Survivors include two sons, Ernie Hass of the home and Gene Hass of Newton; one brother, Mitchell Shook of Conover; three grandchildren, Kathy Odom, Gena Dellinger and Frankie Hass and six great-grandchildren.
