John Byers II

GREENSBORO — John Woodrow Samuel “Sonny” Byers II, 68, of 1215 Willow Road, died Nov. 22, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Ryburn Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in Webb Memorial Lawns. The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

He was born in Cleveland County.

Viola Huskins

CHERRYVILLE — Viola Thrift Huskins, 75, of 1630 Shelby Highway, died Nov. 22, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. today at Mt. Zion Baptist Church where she was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Born in Cleveland County, she was a seamstress.

Survivors include her husband, Carl R. Huskins Sr.; one son, Carl R. “Ronnie” Huskins Jr. of Vale; two daughters, Jane H. Farris of Vale, and Leah H. “Tena” Wise of Lincolnton; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Joseph Ramseur Sr.

Joseph Nathaniel Ramseur Sr., 86, of 1210 East Pine Street, died Nov. 23, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel at Ebony & White’s Funeral Service. Burial will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the chapel 30 minutes prior to the service.

Born in Lincoln County, he was a member of Moore’s Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church where he served as class leader, trustee, and choir member. A U.S. Army WWII veteran, he was employed with Vermont American until retirement.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah Elizabeth Ramseur; two sons, Joseph Ramseur Jr. of Syracuse, N.Y., and Roswell Ramseur of Charlotte; four daughters, Annette Bred of Gastonia, Shirley Ramseur, and Nettie Watts, both of Greensboro, and Cathy Oates of Mt. Holly; one sister, Bessie Atkins of Syracuse, N.Y.; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Moore’s Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 1358, Lincolnton, N.C. 28093.

 

John Hull

CASAR — John David Hull, 59, of 721 Moriah Church Road, died Nov. 23, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Born in Cleveland County, he was a truck driver and served in the National Guard.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Ann Hudson Hull; two sons, Michael Hull of Vale, and David Hull of Rutherfordton; one daughter, Robin Ann Hull of Casar; two brothers, Ronnie Hull and Doug Hull, both of Shelby; one sister, Elizabeth “Lib” Faye Granger of Shelby; and four grandchildren, Alan Hull, Mark Hull, Dillon Hull, and Ashley Hull.

Louis Togno

IRON STATION — Louis John Togno, 79, of 200 James Street, died Nov. 21, 2002. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday at E.F. Drum Funeral Home. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Born in New Orleans, La., he was a U.S. Army WWII and Korean War veteran, and a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. He was employed as a police officer in New York City, N.Y.

Survivors include his wife, Aida Collazo Togno; and one son, Luis Togno of Iron Station.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

 

Patricia Ridenhour

DENVER — Patricia Helms Ridenhour, 40, of 4131 Palmetto Lane, died Nov. 21, 2002. A memorial service was held at 5 p.m. Sunday in the chapel at Warlick Funeral Home.

Born in Miami, Fla., she was a waitress at Logan’s Restaurant.

Survivors include her mother, Dorothy Helms of Denver; her stepfather, James Simmons of Denver; one son, Michael Ridenhour of Murphy; one daughter, Brandy Ridenhour of Charlotte; two brothers, Jimmy McKinney of Morganton, and Billy Helms of Denver; and one sister, Debbie Campbell of Morganton.

 

Arnold Lowman

MAIDEN — Arnold Lee Lowman, 71, of 3447 Mays Chapel Circle, died Nov. 22, 2002. A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Lawings Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Born in Catawba County, he was co-founder and president of Maiden Frame Shop until retirement. He was a U.S. Army paratrooper in Korea, and a member of the American Legion and Gideon’s International.

Survivors include his wife, Lois Lovings Lowman; two daughters, Gail Lowman Bandy, and Teresa Lowman Helderman, both of Newton; one brother, Neal Lowman of Maiden; two sisters, Mildred Lowman Shrum, and Carolyn Lowman Burke, both of Maiden; four grandchildren, Melanie Bandy Spencer, and Monica Helderman, Joshua Bandy, and Justin Helderman; and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to Lawings Chapel Baptist Church Building Fund or Gideon’s International.

Hubert Burleson

CHARLOTTE — Hubert A. Burleson, 85, died Nov. 22, 2002. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Sharon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until noon Tuesday at McEwen Funeral Service, Charlotte Chapel.

He was a U.S. Army WWII veteran who served in the 56th Fighter Group. He was employed as a supervisor with the City of Charlotte Sanitation Department for more than 20 years before retiring.

Survivors include his wife, Toni Keys Burleson; one son, Larry Burleson; one daughter, Sherry O’Shields; three stepchildren; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

 

Barbara Fleming

Barbara Bell Fleming, 61, of 852 Wiltshire Lane, died Nov. 23, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel at Warlick Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 3 until 5 p.m. at the funeral home.

Born in Union, Mississippi, she was a CCU nurse at Lincoln County Hospital until retirement and a volunteer teacher at Lincoln Charter School.

Survivors include her husband, Russell E. Fleming Sr.; one son, Russell E. Fleming Jr. of Lincolnton; one daughter, Mary Marchelle Fleming Alexander of Lincolnton; four grandchildren, Joshua Inman Lenhardt, Lukas Alexander, Nigel Alexander, and Linsey Hayes.

 

William Isenhour

SHERRILLS FORD — William Edward Isenhour, 71, of 6715 Navajo Trail, died Nov. 24, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel at Warlick Funeral Home. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 6 until 7:30.

Born in Gaston County, he was a U.S. Navy, Korean Conflict veteran and the retired owner of Denver Welding.

Survivors include three daughters, Dorothy I. Quintavalla of Maiden, Shannon Wade Hagler of Statesville, and Tomorah I. Shoemaker of Vale; three sisters, Lorene I. Johnson, and Betty Ramsey, both of Belmont, and Kay Shadrack; and three grandchildren, Teresa McFarlend, Leonard “Rusty” Miller IV, and Gavin Shoemaker.

Gary Muniot Sr.

CHARLOTTE — Gary Paul Muniot Sr., 50, of 5835 Country Walk Drive, died Nov. 22, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Craig Memorial Baptist Church where he was a member. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 at Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Born in New Orleans, La., he was employed with Coys Towing Service, was a member of the East Lincoln Optimist Club in Denver; and a former Boy Scout Leader at Hills Chapel United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Kathryn Muniot; one daughter, Beatrice Jane Muniot of Iron Station; one son, Gary Paul Muniot Jr. of Charlotte; three stepdaughters, Rebecca Ann Barnes of Shelby, Elizabeth Ann Barnes of Vale, and Amy Peacock of Denver; one sister, Marsha Muniot of Florida; a brother, Anthony Muniot of Seattle, Wash.; one grandchild; and four step-grandchildren.

ALEXIS — Dorothy Avery Helderman, 84, of 2436 Mt. Zion Church Road, died Nov. 24, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church where she was a member. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:30 until 2 p.m.

Born in Lincoln County, she was a homemaker.

Survivors include a son, Rickey L. Helderman of Alexis; one daughter, Janice H. Little of Alexis; one brother, Tollie Avery of New Bern, N.C.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Paul Bowers

 

SALISBURY — Paul James Bowers, formerly of Charlotte, died Nov. 23, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Grove Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. prior to the memorial service.

Born in Sanford, he was a U.S. Navy WWII veteran, and joined the U.S. Weather Bureau where he retired after 40 years as the Meteorologist-in-Charge of the Charlotte Weather Bureau. He was a member and elder at Hapeville Presbyterian Church in Hapeville, Ga., a charter member at Cary Presbyterian Church in Cary, Avondale Presbyterian Church in Charlotte; and a member of First Presbyterian Church in Salisbury.

Survivors include his wife, Lena Heafner Bowers; two sons, Ronald J. Bowers of Salisbury, and Daryl Miles Bowers of Wilmington; one brother, John Warren Bowers; a sister, Hazel Bowers Batchelor; and two grandchildren, Katie Bowers Bogle, and Susan Bowers Bolden.

Cecilia Woods

Cecilia Ann Woods, 62, of 1064 Dorset Lane, died Nov. 24, 2002.

  Virginia Martin

HOMESTEAD, Fla. — Virginia G. Martin, 77, of 14470 South West 284 Street, died Nov. 20, 2002.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:45 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at Warlick Funeral Home.

Born in Lincoln County, she was a sales associate at a department store.
