Eddie Smith

BLACKSBURG — Eddie Nelson Smith, 48, of 137 Zayes Road, died Oct. 9, 2003. A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Olive Grove Baptist Church. Burial followed.

Born in Cleveland County, he tended horses.

Survivors include his parents, Deborah Kayvon Mixon Smith and Rob Smith of Bostic; one son, Pete Smith of Blacksburg, SC; one brother, Jim Smith of Bessemer City; three sisters, Sue Deveney, Annie Jones both of Bessemer City and Linda Smith of Bostic and two grandchildren, Kenneth Smith and Katherine Smith.

Barbara Weikum

CHERRYVILLE — Barbara Marcel Garren Weikum, 64, of 703 S. Maple St., died Oct. 10, 2003. A graveside service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday at City Memorial Cemetery.

Born in Mecklenburg County, she was a homemaker.

Survivors include one son, Matthew Weikum of Cherryville; two brothers, Grady Garren of Lexington and Jack Gerren of Cherryville and two sisters, Ellen Jennings of Cherryville and Viola Stone of Eden.

Rebecca Hayes

PINEVILLE — Rebecca Griffin Hayes, 60, of 10921 Cooperfield Drive, died Oct. 9, 2003. A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. today at Warlick Funeral Home Chapel.

Born in Gaston County, she was an administrative executive in the healthcare industry.

Survivors include one son Randy Hayes of Mt. Holly and one daughter, Tonya Hayes of Dallas.

Kenneth Cox

CHERRYVILLE — Kenneth Patrick Cox, 22, of 204 S. Elm St., died Oct. 10, 2003. Funeral service were held at 4 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church, where he was a member.

Born in Gaston County, he was employed by Precise Power Services.

Survivors include his parents, Greg and Robin Beam Cox; two sisters, Betsy Dellinger of Cherryville and Margaret Cox of the home; maternal grandmother, Bobbie Sorenson of Asheville and paternal grandmother, Doris Cox of Tifton, Ga.

Merle Sanders

NEWTON — Merle Elizabeth Sanders, 82, of 1475 Simmons St., died Oct. 11, 2003. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Sunday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, where she was a member. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Survivors include two sons, Jon Sanders of Catawba and Bobby Sanders of Newton; one daughter, Joyce Caldwell of Hickory; two sisters, Glenna Fox and Nellie Boston both of Newton and two grandchildren, Shelley Sanders and Terra Caldwell.

William Bowen

DENVER — William Lee Bowen, 68, of 1538 Triangle Circle, died Oct. 11, 2003. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. today at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Born in Kershaw, SC, he was a retired painter with Duke Power.

Survivors include his wife, Rachel Melton Bowen; one daughter, Debbie Sain of Cherryville; one son, Bill Bowen Jr. of Denver; four step-children, Neil Pendleton of Clover, SC, Brenda Pendleton, Tammie Teague and Susan Teague all of Gastonia; three grandchildren, Ravanne Sain, Matt Bowen and Keely Bowen; 11 step-grandchildren and eight step great-grandchildren; three sisters, Eretta Weathers of Cherryville, Dot Bowen of Gastonia and Grace Roger of Stanley and four brothers, Jerry Bowen of Lincolnton, L.B. Bowen and Jack Bowen both of Dallas and Sam Bowen of Columbia, SC.

Ruby Foreman Gabriel, 77, of 275 Colonial Village Drive, died Oct. 10, 2003. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:45 until 10:45 a.m. Tuesday at Warlick Funeral Home.

Born in Stanley County, she was a homemaker.

Survivors include one son, Ronald Jones of Charlotte; three sisters, Opal Rampello of Charlotte, Margaret Whitley of Rock Hill, SC and Bess Camp of Chesapeake Va.; one step-son, Gill Gariel of Mt. Airy; one step-daughter, Cindy of Texas and three grandchildren.

Homer Parker

CASAR — Homer Ray Parker, 56, of 307 Leman Gap Road, died Oct. 12, 2003. Funeral services will at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Olive Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Clover Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8 tonight at Stamey Funeral Home.

Born in Cleveland County, he was a retired carpenter.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Causby Parker of the home; his mother, Zulie Parker of Casar; one son, Chris Parker of the home; two brothers, Dennis Parker of Shelby and Junior Parker of Casar and four sisters, Rachel Buchanan of Hickory, Louise McFarland, Bernice Mosteller and Judy Buff all of Casar.

Roger Lail

Roger Oliver Lail, 39, of 4240 Wilfond Road, died Oct. 11, 2003. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at New Vision Ministries, where he was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8 tonight at the church.

Survivors include his wife, Robin Spake Lail of the home; one step-daughter, Bonnie Rose of Maiden; his parents, D.H. and Jeanette Lail of Lincolnton; three brothers, Larry Lail, Wesley Lail and Paul Lail all of Lincolnton; two sisters, Sharon Childers and Judy Cowan both of Catawba; grandmother, Hattie Lail of Icard and three grandchildren.

FOREST CITY — Meredith Spratt Underwood, 82, of 609 Butler Road, died Oct. 11, 2003. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church, where she as a member. Interment will follow in Cool Springs Cemetery.

Born in Rutherford County, she was retired from Rutherford County School System.

Survivors include one son Neil Underwood of Lincolnton; one brother, Duke Spratt of Statesville and two grandchildren, Molly Underwood and Andrew Underwood.

James Edward “Deke” Deason Sr., 88, of 914 Tait St., died Oct. 11, 2003.
