Garland Martin

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Garland Herndon Martin, 81, of 1301 Mary’s Grove Church Road, died June 29, 2003. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Concord United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full masonic rites at gravesite. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8 tonight at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home.

Born in Gaston County he was a retired retail merchant and a WWII U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include two daughters, Judy Violet Cook of Casar and Patti Louise Cooke of Polkville; one sister, Jeanette Neill of High Point; three grandchildren, Monica Denise Allen, Annette Elliott and Dawn Canipe; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Mary’s Grove United Metodist Church Cemetery Fund, 1223 Mary’s Grove Church Road, Kings Mountain, NC 28086.

 

Ralph Wease

CHERRYVILLE — Ralph Gardner Wease, 83, of 309 W. Second Street, died June 28, 2003. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, where he was a member. Burial will follow in City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 tonight at Carpenters Funeral Home.

Born in Cleveland County he was retired from Burlington Industries and Howell Manufacturing.

Survivors include one daughter, Karen W. Pearson of Cherryville; one son, Keith Wease of Cherryville; four grandchildren, Kim Pearson, Todd Pearson, Brad Pearson and Allyson Buie and three great-grandchildren.

Janette Dodgin

IRON STATION — Janette Helton Dodgin, 74, of 2808 Limestone Lane, died June 28, 2003. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Warlick Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 tonight at Warlick Funeral Home.

Born in McAdenville she was a homemaker and owned and operated an Antique Shop.

Survivors include two sons, Mike Dodgin and Ted Dodgin both of Iron Station; one daughter, Beth Dodgin Gentry of Gaffney, SC; one sister, Thelma Skipper of Gastonia; two brothers, Robert Helton of Gastonia and George Helton of Dallas; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Carol Koop

SHERRILLS FORD — Carol Sue Campbell Koop, 65, of 7225 Right Angle Street, died June 27, 2003. A graveside service will be at 4 p.m. today at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Born in Oakland County, Mich. she was retired from General Motors.

Survivors include her husband Lynwood Koop of the home; two sons, Timothy Koop of Sherrills Ford and Lynwood C. Koop Jr. of Harrison, Mich.; four daughters, Debbie Larr of Holly, Mich., Teresa Rigoulot of Waterford, Mich., Donna Baker of Denver and Kelly Koop of Sherrills Ford; one brother, Kenny Campbell of Kansas City, Kan.; four sisters, Joyce Harrinton and Kay Helzer both of Pontiac, Mich., Sharon Mervyn of Lake Orion, Mich. and Donna McDaniel of Caro, Mich.; 11 grandchildren and five great-granchildren.

Mack Hopper

SHELBY — Mack Hopper Jr., 71, of White Oak Manor, died June 28, 2003.

Arrangements are incomplete at Enloe Mortuary.

 

Ned Rink

MAIDEN — Ned Andrew Rink, 86, of 226 S. 8th Avenue, died June 27, 2003. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. today at First Baptist Church, where he was a member. Burial will follow in Maiden City Cemetery.

Born in Catawba County he was retired from Southern Furniture and co-owner of Rink Florist.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Harbinson of Richland, Wash. and Brenda Witherspoon of Maiden; one brother, Charlie Rink of Greesboro; one sister, Ermona Travis of Newton; four grandchildren, David Witherspoon, Barry Harbinson, Steve Harbinson and Michael Witherspoon and five great-grandchildren.

Edward Bass

SHELBY — Edward Lucies Bass, 82, of 306 Wilson Street, died June 28, 2003.

Roy Carter

VALE — Roy A. Carter Sr., 82, of 3644 Bridle Path Drive, died June 28, 2003. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Palm Tree United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 p.m. today at Stamey Funeral Home.

Born in Anderson County, SC he was a heavy machine mechanic at Burns and Spangler Company and a WWII U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife Evelyn Garver Carter; one son, Roy A Carter Jr. of Hickory; one daughter, Lonnie Sudduth of Newton; three sisters, Margaret Drake of Charlotte, Lola Sandermark of Charleston, SC and Gladys McKnight of Shelby; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

 

Phillip Shook

NEWTON — Phillip Eric Shook, 31, of 1982 Viewpoint Road, died June 27, 2003. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. today at Bethlehem United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Born in Catawba County he was the owner of Temptrol Inc.

Survivors include his wife June Y. Shook of the home; two daughters, Savannah Shook and Leah Shook both of the home; father, Bob Shook and step-mother Blondell both of Bethlehem; mother, Julie Synder of Granite Falls; grandfather, Jesse Shook of Claremont; grandmother, Doris W. Bridges of Newton; three step-brothers, Brad Snyder of Raleigh, David Snyder of Hickory and Craig Westmoreland of Taylorsville; one step-sister, Malena Morrison of Taylorsville and father and mother-in-law, Jeep and Linda Yount of Claremont.

SHELBY — Bobby Eugene Jones, 65, of 5404 Canterbury Drive, died June 27, 2003. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today at Christopher Road Baptist Church, where he was a member. Burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park with Masonic Funeral Rites by State Lodge 375.

Born in Cleveland County he was a U.S. Army veteran, and formerly employed by Fiber Industries and retired from ABB Combustion Engineering.

Survivors include his wife Marie Martin Jones of the home; one son, Marty Jones of Shelby; one daughter, Melody Ramsey of Shelby; two brothers, Ricky Jones of Rutherfordton and Jake Jones of Glenville, Ga.; four sisters, Marcia Hooper of Shelby, Linda Vash of Lincolnton, Brenda Clanton and Emily Keener of Lake Norman; six grandchildren, Derek Ramsey, DeAnna Ramsey, Zachary Jones, Katelyn Jones, Kandyce Jones and Ethan Jones.

STANLEY — Beatrice Gibson Tanner, 101, of 7010 Old Plank Road, died June 26, 2003. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today at Bethel Baptist Church, where she was a member. Burial will follow in Gold Hill/Rock Hill Cemetery.

Born in Gaston County she a homemaker.

Survivors include one daughter, Juanita Nixon McLean of the home; 10 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, 23 great great-grandchildren and four great-great great-grandchildren.

Mattie Wehunt

CHERRYVILLE — Mattie Ray Wehunt, 82, of 6728 Clyde Wehunt Road, died June 26, 2003. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at North Brook Baptist Church, where she was a member. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Born in Todd, NC she was employed by Scandure Inc.

Survivors include one son, Robert Kirk Black of Cherryville; three brothers, Fletcher Ray of Todd, Charles Ray of West Jefferson and Harrison Ray of Boone; two sisters, Grace Ray of Todd and Trudy Hayes of Charlotte; six grandchildren, Jeffery Black, Justin Black, Tommy Hayes, Zachray Hayes, Kristin Anzaldua and Brandon Anzaldua.

Prue Holden

CHERRYVILLE — Prue Helton Holen, 94, of 111 Harrilson Road, died June 26, 2003. A graveside memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. The family received friends following the graveside service.

Born in Gaston County she was a retired hairdresser.

Survivors include one sister, Mary Byrd of Lenoir and a number of neices and nephews.

Mary Sutton

Mary Grace Shultz Sutton, 98, of 2229 Drive-In Road, died June 29, 2003. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Warlick Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Gainsville Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Tuesday at Warlick Funeral Home.

Born in Sevier County, Tenn. she was a homemaker and retired from the textile industry.

Survivors include one son, Bruce Sutton Jr. of Lincolnton; two daughters, Doris McQuester of Lincolnton and Hattie Boyles of Raleigh; two sisters, Ethel Walker and Mabel Caldwell both of Lincolnton; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and  three great-great grandchildren.
