CHERRYVILLE — Fred Canada Neill Sr., 101, of 503 Old Post Rd., died May 1, 2003. Funeral services were held Sunday at First Wesleyan Church, where he
was a member. Burial followed in City Memorial Cemetery.
Born in Gaston County, he was a retiree from City of Cherryville, Dora Mill, Carlton Mill and First
Wesleyan Church.
Survivors include two sons, James Paul Neill of Sparks, Nev and Fred C. Neill Jr. of Cherryville; two
brothers Jim Neill of Cherryville and Marcus Neill of Bessemer City; two sisters Vera Hannon and Bertha Russ both of Cherryville, 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 12 great great-grandchildren.

NEWTON — Joseph Alexander Bumgarner, 78, of 912 East 1st Street, died May 2, 2003. Funeral services were Sunday at Bethnay United Church of Christ, where he
was a member. Burial followed in Eastview Cemetery with military graveside rites by the American Legion Post 16.
Born in Lincoln County he was a U.S. Army World War II 82nd Airborne veteran, a retiree from Carolina
Mills and a member of the American Legion Post 16 in Newton.
Survivors include one son, Stephan “Pete” Bumgarner of Newton; two daughters, Mary “Susie” Meyer of
Conover and Patricia “Pat” Connor of Claremont; ten brothers, Wade Bumgarner of Matthews, Howard Bumgarner, Paul Bumgarner, Rob Bumgarner and Terrell Bumgarner all of Maiden, Richard Bumgarner of Catawba,
Lewis Bumbarner and Clyde Bumgarner of Newton, Harry Bumgarner of Vale and Don Bumgarner of Florida; two sisters, Bonnie Laney of Maiden and Ruth Warlick of Morganton, four grandchildren, three step-grandchildren
and one great-grandchild.

Born in Catawba County he was an Army veteran.
Survivors include two sons, Steve Thornburg of Maiden and Johnny Thornburg Jr. of Iron Station; two
daughters, Sherrian Henkle of Lowesville and Lisa Martin of Maiden; one step-son, Eddie Shelton of Lincolnton; two nephews of who he was guardian Tim Thornburg and Jeff Thornburg both of Maiden; one sister; Joyce
Anders of Maiden; and five grandsons, Dexter Shelton, Ethan Thornburg, Spencer Thornburg, Kenny Henkle and Nicky Henkle.

Born in Lincolnton he was a member of the Dublin United Methodist Church where he was an active in the
Methodist’s Men’s activities and a retiree of Volvo, Dublin.
Survivors include his mother, Edna Carpenter Schronce of Lincolnton; his wife, Elizabeth Warren
Schronce of Pulaski; one son, Mark R. Schronce of Pulaski; one granddaughter, Amanda Schronce of Pulaski; and one brother, Edward Schronce of Lincolnton.

Born in Gaston County he owned and operated Helms Store.
Survivors include his son, Jim Helms of Cherryville; granddaughter, Sherrie Hayes of Cherryville;
grandson Kenneth H. Helms of Cherryville; four great-grandchildren and two nephews.
