Tom Travis

CONOVER — Thomas “Tom” Henry Travis, 60, of 2548 Belshire Drive, died Jan. 27, 2004. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Catawba United Methodist Church, where he was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 tonight at the church.

Born in Catawba County, he was a retired plant manager with Clayton Marcus.

Survivors include his wife, Tinette Campbell Travis of the home; two daughters, Donna Lail of Conover and Diann Tinkham of Eure; four brothers, William Travis and Fred Travis both of Catawba, Harold Travis of Statesville and Ralph Travis of San Angelo, Texas and five grandchildren.

Burke Mortuary in Newton is in charge of arrangements.

 

Carrie Dawson

BESSEMER CITY — Carrie Bennett Dawson, 82, of 406 Sunset Drive, died Jan. 26, 2004. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at EF Drum Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Born in Polk County, she was a member of Bright Light Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Billy Dawson of Stanley, Bobby Dawson of Vale and Billy Gene Dawson of Bessemer City; two daughters, Ruby Wells of Gastonia and Ann Carpenter of Hickory; two sisters, Geraldine Riddle of Gray Court, SC and Betty Mercer of Dallas, Ore.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

 

Jack Richard

VALE — Jack Albert Richard, 71, of 5722 Reepsville Road, died Jan. 26, 2004. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Born in Lincoln County, he was retired from Vermont American and a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Leatherman Richard of the home; two sons, Todd Richard of Vale and James Richard of Tokyo, Japan; two daughters, Becky Crouse and Amy Hix both of Vale; one brother, Joe Richard of Vale; one sister, Doris Ennis of Vale; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Leann Murphy

MAIDEN — Leann Peeler Murphy, 30, of 417 Shawnee Trail, died Jan. 25, 2004. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Born in Gaston County, she was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Blake Murphy of the home; one son, Alex Murphy of the home; one step-son, Kristofer Murphy of Lexington; her mother, Nannie Lazette Traynor of Vale; two brothers, Danny Peeler of Vale and Terry Peeler of Crouse and four sisters, Susan Black, Debbe Scronce and Lonni Hull all of Vale and Libbie Peeler of Lincolnton.

April Smyth

FLORIDA — April Joy Smyth, 31, of 8917 N. Davis Hwy., Pensacola, Fla., died Jan. 25, 2004. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Born in Hickory, she was an Executive Accounts Coordinator with a territory on the Florida gulf coast and parts of Alabama.

She is survived by her mother and father, Nancy and Roger Melson of Lincolnton; one sister, Hope Smyth of Greensboro; one step-sister, Peggy Lombardo and two step-brothers, Rick Melson of Lincolnton and David Melson of Monroe.

Memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Lincoln County or the Lincoln County Literacy Council.

 

Garland Gilbert

Garland Teague Gilbert, 89, of 2479 W. Hwy. 27, died Jan. 27, 2004. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, where he was a member. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Born in Lincoln County, he was auctioneer/owner of Lincoln Auction Company, was past Chief and retired volunteer of Howards Creek Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the American Association of Auctioneers and a past president of the NC Association of Auctioneers, a real estate agent, a member of the Lincoln Lodge 137 AF & AM, and member of the American Legion and VFW and a member of the Woodmen of the World.

Rachel Goins Davis, 63, of 1001 W. Hwy. 150, died Jan. 26, 2004. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in South River Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Born in Lincoln County, she worked in home healthcare.

Survivors include her husband, Ray Davis of the home; one daughter, Melinda Reed of Lincolnton; two brothers, Bruce Goins of Lincolnton and Mike Goins of Iron Station; four sisters, Nell Goins, Louise Sigmon, Helen Hull and Carol Thomas all of Lincolnton and three grandsons, Jon Reed Jr., Kenny Reed and James Reed.
