KINGS MOUNTAIN — Kathryn Absher London, 72, of 801 Jackson St., died Dec. 31, 2003. Funeral services  were at 11 a.m. today at New Life Baptist Church. Burial followed in Westview Gardens.

Born in Cleveland County, she was a homemaker.

Survivors include one son, John London Jr. of Bessemer City; one daughter, Patricia London of Kings Mountain; two sisters, Betty Matheny of Forest City and Robin Murray of Fla.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Jim Sherrill

SHERRILLS FORD — Henry James “Jim” Sherrill, 60, of Barkley Road, died Jan. 1, 2004. A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Born in Statesville, he was retired from Yellow Freight as a truck driver and was a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Sherrill; mother, Merle Sherrill of Denver; two daughters, Stephanie Sawyer and Jamye Sherrill both of Sherrills Ford; two sisters, Kaye Eurey of Lincolnton and T’Lene Barker of Devner and one granddaughter, Regan Sawyer.

Naomi Lovelace

Naomi Ruth Lovelace, 67, of 1652 Woolie Road, died Jan. 1, 2004. Funeral services were at 3 p.m. Sunday at EF Drum Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Born in Catawba County, she was a retired registered nurse from the Brian Center and was a member of Gainsville Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Terry Lovelace of Newton; one granddaughter, Allison Lovelace; one sister, Joann Helms of Charlotte and one brother, Yates Lovelace of Lincolnton.

Matthew Miller

VALE — William Matthew Miller, 88, of Matthew Miller Road, died Jan. 4, 2004. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, where he was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Born in Lincoln County, he was a self employed farmer.

Survivors include one son, Carroll Miller of Vale; two daughters, Kay Beam and Peggy Houser both of Cherryville; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

James Canipe

James Clinton Canipe, 74, of 5091 Fairview Church Road, died Jan. 1, 2004. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today at Hull’s Grove Baptist Church, where he was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Born in Gaston County, he was retired from Cochrane Furniture and was a security guard at JP Stevens.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Jo Ingle Canipe of the home; three daughters, Linda Bollinger of Maiden, Brenda Canipe and Rita Gantt both of Lincolnton; one brother, Glenn Canipe of Hickory; one grandson, David Setzer; one granddaughter, Tammy Bollinger and one great-grandson.

Harley Scruggs

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Rev. Harley Spurgeon Scruggs, 97, of 343 Crocker Road, died Jan. 2, 2004. Funeral services were at 3 p.m. Sunday at Cherryville Missionary Methodist Church. Burial followed in City Memorial Cemetery.

Born in Rutherford County, he was a member and past president of the North Carolina Missionary Methodist Conference, and was a retired pastor from Cherryville Missionary Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Willie Shuford Scruggs of the home; seven daughters, Nadine Bagwell of Grover, Dot Carrigan of Kings Mountain, Gaynell Lail of Lake Wylie, SC, Creola Lail of Shelby, Pat Houser of Lake Tillery, SC, Tinky Scarborough of Kings Mountain and Debbie Fortenberry of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and four great great-grandchildren.

Mabel Martin

Pearlie Mabel Martin, 94, of the Brian Center, died Jan. 2, 2004. A graveside service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Shiloh Methodist Church.

Born in Lincoln County, she was  retired from Dr. John Gamble as a nurse and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Survivors include a number of nieces and nephews.

Joyce Hull

Joyce Wynell Hull, 55, of Lincoln Nursing Center, died Jan. 3, 2004. A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Ebenezer Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 tonight at Warlick Funeral Home.

Survivors include one step-brother, Gary Norman of Conover; two step-sisters, Lisa Canipe of Lincolnton and Sandra Norman of Lawton, Okla. and step-father, Roy Norman of Lincolnton.

 

Karley Wise

Karley Jayne Wise, 2, of 1064 Dorset Lane, died Jan. 3, 2004. A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. today at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Survivors include her father, Wayne Wise of Lincolnton; mother, Heather Woods of Lincolnton; one brother, Wesley Woods of Lincolnton; one sister, Brandi Bower of Maiden; paternal grandmother, Dorothy Wise of Lincolnton and maternal grandfather, Sam Woods of Lincolnton.

Alvin Drum

NEWTON — Alvin Wayne Drum, 79, of 2297 S. Hwy. 321, died Jan. 4, 2004. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at East Maiden Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Maiden City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3 p.m. Tuesday prior to the service.

Born in Catawba County, he was a WWII U.S. Army veteran and a member of American Legion Post 240.

Survivors include his wife, Rosa Drum of the home; one daughter, Donna Davis of Newton, two grandsons, Shaun Davis and Jeffrey Davis and two sisters, Eulalah Williams of Maiden and Stella Lineberger of Cramerton.

NEWTON — Dante Lashane Allen, 29, died Jan. 3, 2004. A memorial service was held at 7 p.m. Saturday at Cornerstone Church.

CHERRYVILLE — John Edward McGinnis, 88, of Vista Drive, died Jan. 3, 2004. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, where he was a member. Burial will follow in City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 tonight at the church.

Born in Lincoln County, he was employed by Dora Yarn and was retired from JP Stevens, Boger City Plant.

Survivors include two sons, Larry McGinnis and Morris McGinnis both of Cherryville; one brother, CA McGinnis of Crouse; five sisters, Inez Cloninger of Lincolnton, Mae Jenkins of Cherryville, Bessie Bowman and Betty Hastings both of Shelby and Ada Green of Columbia, SC; four grandchildren, Tony McGinnis, Kim Cartee, Sabrina McGinnis and Kendra McGinnis and five great-grandchildren.

VALE — Gary “Bud” Abernathy, 57, of 8238 Hallman Mill Road, died Jan. 3, 2004. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today at Hull’s Grove Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Born in Cleveland County, he was a truck driver for Foothills Trucking.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine Willis Abernathy of the home; two sons, Chris Abernathy of Cherryville and Randy Abernathy of Lincolnton; one daughter, Melissa Webb of Lincolnton; one sister, Dian Felmet of Hickory and three grandchildren, Jonathan Abernathy, Ashley Webb and Logan Webb.

GASTONIA — Larry Wayne Sanders, 51, of Mooney Mobile Home Park 27, St. Marks Church Road, died Jan. 1, 2004. A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. today in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel.

Born in Lincoln County, he was employed by Excel.

Survivors include his mother, Mazell Sanders of Lincolnton; three brothers, Jimmy Helms of Alabama, Johnny Helms of Charleston, SC and Jimmy Helms of Lincolnton; three sisters, Sue Owens and Brenda Spivey both of Lincolnton and Barbara Keeter of Newton-Conover.

SHELBY — Blanche Marvin Arnold, 91, of 417 Carolina Avenue, died Jan. 3, 2004.

Pastrano Boulware Keast, 39, died Dec. 29, 2003. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at New Ellis Chapel Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Survivors include her parents, William Boulware of Shelby and Gladys Boulware-Hill of Lawndale.

David Malcolm Brooks, 61, of 1327 Jacklyn Lane, died Jan. 3, 2004. A private memorial service will be held Jan. 7 in Asheville.

Born in Buncombe County, he was a driver for Brooks Transportation.

Survivors include three sons, Anthony Brooks of Lincolnton, Michael Brooks of Gastonia and Josh Brooks of Mt. Holly; his parents, Ben and Jane Brooks of Candler; one sister, Viki Warren of Candler and four grandchildren, Ben Brooks, Anna Brooks, Steven Brooks and Gavin Brooks.

Edmond “Ed” Thomas Galluzi, 43, of Lincolnton, died Dec. 31, 2003. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 until 4 p.m. today and 7 until 8:30 tonight at Bass-Smith Funeral Home.

Born in Cornwall, NY, he was a self employed plumber and of the Catholic faith.

Survivors include his parents, George and Muriel Galluzi of Hickory and four brothers, Stephen Galluzi of Boca Raton, Fla.; George Galluzi of Lathrop, Calif., Raymond Galluzi and Mark Galluzi both of Hickory.

 

Edna Moore

SHERRILLS FORD — Edna Hager Moore, 87, of 5129 Lynwood Road, died Jan. 4, 2004. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Bethel United Methodist Church, where she was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Burke Mortuary in Maiden.

She was born in Lincoln County.

Survivors include one brother, Bob Hager of Denver and one sister, Mable Lineberger of Denver.

Pete Watts

MAIDEN — Coy Robert “Pete” Watts Sr., 61, of 4179 Deerfield Drive, died Jan. 4, 2004. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Independent Baptist Tabernacle in Dallas. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Warlick Funeral Home.

Born in Lincoln County, he was employed by Times Oil and was a U.S. Army veteran and served in the National Guard.

Survivors include his wife, Norma Watts of the home; one son, Coy Watts Jr. of Conover; one daughter, Cheri Watts of Maiden; three brothers, RA Watts Jr. of Lincolnton, Jim Watts of Maiden and Les Bennett of Lincolnton; four sisters, Nancy Thomas, Mary Robinson and Mary Bennett all of Lincolnton and Kathy Beal of Maiden and two granddaughters, Holly Watts and Mallory Watts.

Joe Spencer Poteat, 80, of the Brian Center, died Jan. 4, 2004. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Floral Gardens in High Shoals. The family will receive friends from 3 until 4 p.m. Wednesday following the burial in the fellowship hall of David Memorial Baptist Church.

Born in Spartanburg, SC, he was retired from JP Stevens and was a WWII U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes Poteat of High Shoals; five children, David Poteat of High Shoals, Donald Poteat of Vale, Kathy Messick of Kings Mountain, Bobby Poteat of Lincolnton and Cindy Hendricks of Lincolnton; one brother, CJ Poteat of Dallas; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild.

 

Janette Mosteller

HILDEBRAN — Janette Eller Mosteller, 41, of Curleys Fish Camp Road, died Jan. 1, 2004. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday at Warlick’s Baptist Church, where she was a member. Burial followed at Burke Memorial Park.

Born in Lincoln County, she was a former employee of MDI and Baker Furniture Company.

Survivors include her mother, Mildred Eller of Lincolnton; husband, Gary Mosteller of the home; two daughters, Jessie Hughes of Hickory and Ashley Mosteller of the home; two brothers, Jack Eller Jr. of Vale and Michael Eller of Lincolnton and one sister, Genelle Boyles of Lincolnton.

DAVIDSON — Edward Champion Land Jr., 91, died Jan. 1, 2004. A graveside service was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Asheboro City Cemetery. A memorial service followed at 3 p.m. at First United Methdodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Land; one daughter, Christinanna Johnson of Wilmington; one son, Edward Land III of Statesville and five grandchildren, Anna Averitt, Allison Land, Emilie Land and Edward Land IV.

TARBORO — Caroline Crumley, 88, died Dec. 30, 2003. A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Friday at Westminster Garden in Greensboro.

She was a member of Presbyterian Church of the Covenant.

Survivors include her husband, Charles Crumley of the home; two sons, Dr. Charles Crumley of Lincolnton and Robert Crumley of Rocky Mount; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
