Johnson Hunter Sr.

Johnson Brown Hunter Sr., 85, of 124 Abernathy Street, died Jan. 24, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. today at Tucker’s Grove United Methodist Church where he was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

Born in Lincoln County, he was a U.S. Army veteran, and worked in the textile industry at J.P. Stevens until retirement.

Survivors include his wife, Willie Mae Hill Hunter; four sons, Johnson B. Hunter Jr. of Milwaukee, Wis., Billy James Hunter of Raleigh, Larry D. Hunter and Michael T. Hunter, both of Lincolnton; two daughters, Sheila H. Finger, and Robin H. Anderson, both of Lincolnton; one brother, Alfred Hunter of Waynesville; three sisters, Nellie Loftin of Lincolnton, Mary Jinks of Wash., D.C., and Ethel Goodwin of Charlotte; and nine grandchildren.

Maria Rivera

CHERRYVILLE — Maria Magdalena Rivera, 15, of 233 Delview Drive, died Jan. 24, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Shelby where she attended. Burial will follow in City Memorial Cemetery.

Born in Buffalo, N.Y., she attended John Chavis Middle School.

Survivors include her parents, John and Eugenia Rivera of the home; two brothers, Thomas M. G. Rivera of Cherryville, and John James Rivera of Springfield, Va.; one sister, Julie Lynne Grabowski of Dallas, Texas; and grandmothers, Francisca Rivera of Buffalo, N.Y., and Gloria E. Rivera.

Vera Kiser

CHERRYVILLE — Vera Inez Stroupe Kiser, 92, of 1070 Sellerstown Road, died Jan. 26, 2002. A funeral service was held 3 p.m. Sunday at Shady Grove Baptist Church where she was a member. Burial followed in the church cemetery. 

Born in Gaston County, she worked alongside her husband in the churches that he pastored, serving in many capacities within church and community programs.

Survivors include a daughter, Martha Kiser Hinson of Rock Hill, S.C.; a sister, Clara Stroupe of Cherryville; six grandchildren, Ted Kiser, Dick Kiser, Eric Morin, Allen Hinson, Michael Hinson, and Devin Hinson; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Crete Black

CATAWBA — Crete Novella Black, 87, of the Abernethy Center, formerly of Little Mountain Road, died Jan. 26, 2002. A funeral service was held 3 p.m. Sunday at Pisgah United Methodist Church where she was a life member. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Born in Catawba County, she was a seamstress for Carolina Glove Company.

Survivors include a sister, Neva B. Brotherton of Aiken, S.C.

Don Wallace

Don Taylor Wallace, 41, of Crystal Court, died Jan. 26, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Living Word Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 8 at the church.

Born in Gaston County, he was a welder with Under Ground Construction Company.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah Crouse Wallace; a son, Joshua Wallace of the home; his parents, J.D. and Ruby Wallace of Dallas; and three brothers, Ed Wallace of Stanley, Jack Wallace, and Wayne Wallace, both of Dallas.

Cecil Flowers Sr.

Cecil Audrey Flowers Sr., 92, of 2454 South Highway 321, died Jan. 25, 2002. A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. today in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Born in Catawba County, he was the owner of Cecil’s Slaw Company in Lincolnton until retirement.

Survivors include one son, Cecil Flowers Jr. of Lincolnton; two grandchildren, Jenny Gunter, and Eddie Flowers, both of Lincolnton; and three great-grandchildren.

Milton Warlick

Milton Glenn “Buck” Warlick, 69, of 902 Tait Street, died Jan. 26, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Southside Baptist Church where he was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at Warlick Funeral Home.

He was the owner and operator of Warlick Shoes in Lincolnton until retirement.

Survivors include his wife, Nadean Houser Warlick; one daughter, Glenda W. Weaver of Lincolnton; one sister, Earlene Propst of Morganton; and one grandson, Dustin Weaver.

J. E. Workman

VALE — J.E. “Boge” Workman, 82, of 2468 Peeler Road, died Jan. 26, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. today at Mulls Chapel Baptist Church where he attended. Burial will follow in Ebenezer United Methodist Church cemetery.

Born in Cleveland County, he was a forklift operator for Broyhill Industries of Conover and a farmer until retirement.

Survivors include five sons, Loyd Workman, Guy Workman, Billy Workman, and David Workman, all of Vale, and Ronnie Workman of Lincolnton; seven daughters, Muriel Hull,  Geneva Towery, and Janice Houser, all of Vale, Dorothy Bright, and Kathy Martin, both of Swansboro, and Joan Chapman, and Darnell Carswell, both of Morganton; two sisters, Laura Willis, and Ann Wright, both of Vale; 20 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Martha Upton

CHERRYVILLE — Martha Elaine Willis Upton, 42, of 207 South Dixie Street, died Jan. 26, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m. today at Plainsview Baptist Church where she was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Born in Lincoln County, she was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Roger Dale Upton Sr.; two sons, Roger Dale Upton Jr., and Curtis Upton, both of Cherryville; a daughter, Christy Elaine Upton of Cherryville; two brothers, Jimmy C. Willis, and Roger Dale Willis, both of Cherryville; a half brother, David Willis of Hickory; a sister, Wanda Louise Scott of Shelby; two half-sisters, Louise Rainey, and Brenda Workman, both of Hickory; and one grandchild, Jackson Alexander Upton.

Pearl Banks

VALE — Pearl K. Banks, 96, of 1492 Cat Square Road, died Jan. 26, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Hill Baptist Church where she was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

Born in Great Falls, S.C., she was a homemaker. 

 Survivors include her husband, Sid Banks; three sons, Thomas “T.S.” Banks of Vale, Clarence Benjamin “C.B.” Banks of Kannapolis, and Vernon Banks of Lincolnton; four daughters, Lithia Williams, and Annie Bryant, both of Vale, Christine Bess, and Catherine Nichols, both of Lincolnton; two brothers, Robert Kinlow of Waco and William Kinlow of Cherryville; five sisters, Georgia Jefferies of Cherryville, Willie Mae Cumberlander of Waco, Curlee Clemons of Statesville; Ella Frances Cunningham of Lincolnton, and Katherine Bolder of Greensboro; 30 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 30 great-great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren.

Boyce Pope Sr.

CHERRYVILLE — Boyce Wayne Timothy Pope Sr., 57, of 208 Marcus Drive, died Jan. 23, 2002. A funeral service was held 2 p.m. Sunday at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Belmont.

Born in Gaston County, he was a supervisor of Carolina Mills until retirement.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Martin Pope; three sons, Boyce Wayne Timothy Pope Jr. of Stanley, Richard Lee Pope of Belmont, and Billy Joe Pope of Gastonia; three daughters, Rebecca Gayle Martin of High Shoals, Angela Christine Pope of Cherryville, and Geisha Renee Cheshire of Belmont; two brothers, Gary Lee Pope of Belmont, and Billy Max Pope of Gastonia; three sisters, Carolyn Wyatt and Jane Pope, both of Bessemer City, and Kay Pope of Belmont; and 11 grandchildren.

Annie Darnell

Annie Remona Edge Darnell, 73, of 221 McGinnis Avenue, died Jan. 26, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Fellowship Christian Community Center. Burial will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery.

Born in Buncombe County, she worked in child care for the Fellowship Christian Center.

Survivors include one son, Tony L. Darnell of Huntersville; one daughter, Nickie D. Avery of Lincolnton; her mother, Vera McGregor Edge of Lincolnton; two brothers, Robert H. Edge of Lincolnton, and William L. Edge of Titusville, Fla.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Born in Lincoln County, he was a dairy farmer until retirement.

Survivors include four sons, Billy Joe Lynch of Lincolnton, Charles Lynch of Elk Creek, Johnny Lynch of Cherryville, and Fred Lynch of Troutman; five daughters, Lucille Garner of Walkertown, Betty Bradshaw of Mooresville, Margaret Baer of Maryville, Tenn., Judy Meadows of Vale, and Frances Hall of Burlington; one brother, Dee Lynch of Denver; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Bud Shull

Bud Ralph Shull, 51, of 710 Louise Avenue, died Jan. 27, 2002. A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Laurel Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 6:30 until 8:30 at Warlick Funeral Home.

Born in Burke County, he worked for RSI Home Products.

Survivors include two sons, Bobby Shull, and Jeff Fowler, both of Vale; one daughter, Cynthia Goins of Lincolnton; his mother and step-father, Laura Willis and L.A. Willis of Vale; one brother, Hugh Shull of Sunshine, Bostic; two sisters, Kitty Barrett of Lawndale, and Margaret Rudisill of Vale; four grandchildren, Mackenzie Goins, Cricket Shull, Cierra Shull, and Brittney Fowler.
