Attendance lines on school board agenda
By ANDIE LEATHERMAN, LTN Staff Writer
Dec. 28, 2001 - Attendance lines for the county’s newest high school will probably be decided Wednesday.
The issue is on the agenda for the Lincoln County School Board’s January meeting, and it may take some deliberation to resolve.
“Hopefully we can come to a decision,” said board chairperson Jean Dellinger.
Some parents and teachers from Lincolnton High School spoke out against the proposed lines during a Dec. 12 public hearing, saying the new districts would create an inner city school at LHS.
“We definitely should consider what we heard from citizens,” Dellinger said.
No alternative district lines have been proposed though Dellinger did say she wanted to know more about how the lines would affect student populations numbers
at other schools
Under the proposed lines, students living in the Pumpkin Center Middle School attendance area will go to the new high school located on Lee Lawing Road.
An area south of Lincolnton is currently considered a freedom of choice district where students are allowed to go to either West Lincoln or Lincolnton High School. Under the new plan, that
area would become part of the West Lincoln district.
Students living in the choice area north of N.C. 27, east of Lincolnton, will attend the new school. Students living in the choice area south of N.C. 27, east of Lincolnton, will attend
Lincolnton High School.
When the new lines will go into effect will also be discussed Wednesday night, Dellinger said. Board members will consider holding off on putting the changes into effect until 2003.
Student transfers out of district will not be eliminated system wide, Dellinger said. Currently, if a school is not overcrowded, students may transfer into it
but must provide transportation. This may continue unless the school of choice is at capacity.
Also on the agenda for Wednesday night is a construction update on school. Board members will hear a construction timeline and look at a media and security
contract.
Updates on construction of the new elementary school and additions at West Lincoln High will be discussed also.
Public input will be sought Jan. 7 for naming the new school. A public hearing will be held at 7 p.m. at the administrative office on Generals Boulevard.
Anyone may speak but comments must be limited to three minutes.
