Newcomers elected in High Shoals

HIGH SHOALS — High Shoals residents voted-in two new council members and reelected two already serving on the board.

Mayor Fred “Dennis” Gilbert ran unopposed and secured 35 of the 40 votes cast Tuesday.

Of the total 154 votes cast for three open council seats, residents made it clear which candidates they wanted to serve.

Denese Abernathy Cook walked away with 44 votes, 28.6 percent of the total.

Kathy Rhyne, a former council member, garnered 35 votes, or 22.7 percent.

And Lisa Mullinax Stamey won the third seat with 34 votes and 22 percent.

Stamey was appointed to the council this year to complete the term of a council member who resigned due to job conflicts.

Other candidates’ totals were: Donna Barber, 16; Barbara Cash, 5; Glenda Hall, 3; and Cheryl Harris, 8.

Rhyne said before the election that she wants to focus on providing more recreation opportunities for children in the area who have nothing to do.

She also listed a new sewer system and finding a use for the old High Shoals Elementary School as priorities.

Councilwoman Phyllis Friday won the unexpired term on the council ending in 2005. She ran unopposed for the seat.

The council was shaken up this year with the resignation of Mayor James Montgomery. Montgomery planned on moving outside the city limits and resigned from his position in March.

The gavel then went to Mayor Pro-Tem Sylvia Johnson. Gilbert was appointed mayor pro-tem.

At a later meeting Gilbert took over the position of mayor. That left one seat on the council vacant.

The High Shoals City Council meets at 6 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month at City Hall.
