MAIDEN — Maiden welcomed back the mayor and three new town council members Tuesday.
Incumbent Mayor Zane Hudson was voted back in by 283 votes for mayor, running close to Bob Smyre at 268 votes and Doris Bumgarner at 124 votes.
The town council now consists of a complete new set of faces, Brad Shelton (386 votes), and George McClellan (358 votes) who will both serve four years.
Marsha Howard (297 votes) will serve two years.
Sharon Sipe (275 votes), Tammy Lawing (256 votes), and Christopher Lowman (229 votes) were defeated Tuesday evening.
Hudson said he was happy the citizens had confidence in him.
“I will look to continue where we were at,” he said. “We will work on the downtown area looking better and filling out the town council.”
Hudson said he is happy about the new members but was disappointed in one vote. He would not comment on which candidate it was.
“I think we are on the right track,” he said. “We have two good business people, Brad and George, and Marsha who used to work in the police force.”
Hudson said he is eager to talk with members of the council to see where they stand and what their interests are.
Bumgarner said there was a great turn-out to the election and it made her really proud.
She said she thinks there needs to be a lot of changes made in the town.
“I hope the mayor will do a good job,” she said. “They have some new people on the council now so hopefully they can help with working on some changes.”
Shelton said he was very happy at how well the election went, but was a little surprised.
“Two people I thought would get elected didn’t make it,” he said. “I thought Tammy Lawing and Christopher Lowman would make it.”
Regardless, he said he is anxious to get started with the people who did make it.
McClellan said he is excited to be on the town council serving four years.
“I think Marsha knows a lot about the town and I am excited to see what Brad will bring forward,” he said. “I thank everyone for voting for me and I will make them proud they did it.”
Howard said she thinks there are a lot of good people coming on to the council.
“The election went really well,” she said. “We have a lot of real active people to help get things done.”
Sipe said she was very disappointed at the outcome because she really wanted to serve another term.
But she accepted their decision.
“The people voted and they made a choice,” she said.
Lowman said he felt the people got what they wanted.
“I think they had their minds made up,” he said. “I hope it goes well for them.”
Elected members will take their position at the next town council meeting, Nov. 17.
