November29, 2002 - VALE — Thanksgiving may have just ended, but it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas for Henry Helms.

Helms owns Helms Christmas Tree Farm in Vale and yesterday kicked off his busiest time of the year.

(Top) Henry Helms points out the different varieties of Christmas trees available at his farm. The trees take a minimum of six years to grow full size, Helms said. (Bottom) Libby Sharpe works to create a custom wreath Wednesday. The wreaths are popular, and in 1999, the State of North Carolina Official Christmas Wreath that hung in the Governor's Mansion was made at Helms Christmas Tree Farm.  Tree farms offer customers something special, Helms said. "It's a whole lot different out here on the farm than it is on the lot." (LTN photos by Jenny Walling)

Ready, set, SHOP. Lincoln bargain hunters were up before dawn today for Wal-Mart and Belks Department Store sales. Many braved sub-freezing temperatures as they waited in long lines for the 6 a.m. opening. (LTN photo by Jenny Walling)
