Lincoln board goes Republican

By ALICE SMITH, LTN Staff Writer

November 6, 2002 - One board, five seats, five Republicans.

Voters chose Republicans Carrol Mitchem and James “Buddy” Funderburk as their new county commissioners Tuesday night, making the board completely Republican controlled.

The unofficial results show Mitchem with 10,271 votes — 27.4 percent of the total.

Funderburk was close behind with 9,727 votes, claiming 25.9 percent.

Democrats Stanley Roseboro and Tom Martin got 8,030 and 7,546 votes, respectively. Libertarian Shane Killian received 1,051 votes; Libertarian Richard Hicks, 871.

While celebrating at Republican Party headquarters on South Academy Street, both agreed on two things: they’re glad the race is over, and the “good ole boys” are here to stay.

“I’m glad it’s over,” Funderburk said. “But now it’s only just begun. ”

Mitchem said it was he and Funderburk’s clean campaigns which led to the win.

“The people of Lincoln County have spoken,” he said. “We talked about the issues, and people recognized that.”

Funderburk pledged his loyalty to Lincoln County residents.

“We’ll be here for the citizens of Lincoln County,” he said.

During his speech to supporters at Republican headquarters, Mitchem mentioned a comment that had appeared in a county newspaper referring to Funderburk and him as “good ole boys.”

“I’m glad to be a good ole boy,” Mitchem said.

He unfolded a T-shirt that was hanging over his arm. In red script on the front were the letters G.O.B.

Emblazoned on the back were the words “Just a good ole boy.”

“Now we’re going to do what we’re supposed to do,” he said.

Both thanked their committees and Leadership for Lincolnton for support.

Funderburk gave a special thanks to his wife and his daughter, Sara.

“She was my right hand through a lot of it,” he said of his wife.

Funderburk, 56, owns Funderburk Batteries and has served on the planning board and board of adjustments.

Mitchem, 46, is a full-time farmer and owner of Mitchem’s Kitchen.
