Exhibit of local artist’s work will aid Amy’s House

November 6, 2002 - DENVER — Artist Angela Parker hopes to empower women by the strokes of her paintbrush.
When she puts paint to canvas, she often features women wearing the battle scars of domestic violence — a subject that hits close to home.
“It seemed like every time I turned around someone was telling me a story of what happened to them,” she says.
The stories brought her to action.
“The more I heard; the more I felt; the more it came out on the canvas.”
Parkers show, “Don’t Forget My Name,” will be on exhibit beginning Friday at Oakstone Gallery, Hwy. 16, Denver.
But the artist says her pieces are not all gloom and doom.
“I paint very bright, expressionistic work,” she says.
Parker’s oil paintings will be on display through December. A portion of the proceeds from purchases and donations will be given to Amy’s House, a Lincoln
County shelter for victims of domestic abuse.
“My heart goes out to them,” Parker says of the women and children at Amy’s House.
The experienced artist and mother of five says she hopes her work will empower and inspire women to take control of their lives. She also wants to shed light
on the subject of domestic violence.
“This needs to help other people. It needs to make people aware.”
An opening reception will be held Friday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. For more information call 704-483-3309.
