Lazy Days of Denver

Music and fun were a good combination at the Denver Days Festival Saturday and Sunday. Above, Kirsten Roberts, a young beauty pageant queen with three national titles, plays the fiddle. Thousands attend first Denver Days Festival

By AMY WADSWORTH, Staff Writer

Denver celebrated in their own little village this weekend, one with street names like “Bojangles,” “Lincoln Medical,” and “Westport Marina” boulevards.

Saturday and Sunday was the community’s first fall festival, “Denver Days,” which proved to be more successful than some had anticipated.

“We had 12 to 13,000 people this weekend,” said Event Coordinator Pat Whitaker. “This is an amazing number for our first year. We were only hoping for 5,000.”

The fall festival had 181 vendors, with food, entertainment, an auto show area, a kids activities area and a visit from “Elvis Presley.”

“Elvis was a tremendous hit Sunday afternoon,” Whitaker said. “I also think another main attraction was the kid zone and of course all of our vendors.”

Cynthia Grembecki of Denver was glad to be at the festival Saturday afternoon with her 2-year-old daughter, Samantha.

“It is something new and a great way to enjoy fall,” she said. “We have done well today, we have had lunch, did some shopping and playing.”

Grembecki said she was impressed with the turnout.

“It is a nice crowd for such a small community,” she said. “It is so nice to be able to do something here rather than having to go to Charlotte or Gastonia.”

Terri Anthony of Mount Holly was enjoying watching her friend’s granddaughter play in the kid zone.

“This is something for us to do outside,” she said. “It is such a pretty day and I like festivals.”

Janie Right of Crouse brought Keleigh, 17 months, and Tori, 6, to enjoy the afternoon at the festival.

“We came for the kids,” Right said. “And to see what was going on.”

Whitaker says plans for next year’s Denver Days will soon be underway.

“We are going to send the community a review and critique,” Whitaker said. “We will also be sending a survey to vendors asking them for suggestions.”

Information from the survey will be analyzed for planning of next year’s festival.
