A Lincoln County high school student was arrested Thursday for allegedly bringing a gun onto a school bus.
Jorge Luis Diaz-Deleon, 16, of 6521 Airview Lane in Denver is charged with felony possession of a firearm on school property, misdemeanor possession of a handgun by a minor and
misdemeanor carrying a concealed weapon.
Diaz-Deleon is a student at North Lincoln High School.
The arrest came after information was given to Principal Rick Freeman that a student had possibly possessed a firearm on the school bus while on the way home from school, said Lt. David
Carpenter of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.
Witnesses told the principal that the gun was not loaded, Carpenter said.
School resource officer Jesse Helms and sheriff’s Detective Lee Keller interviewed several students Thursday evening concerning the information.
Diaz-Deleon was arrested as a result of that investigation, which went on until early Friday morning.
Authorities recovered a .25-caliber semi-automatic handgun from Diaz-Deleon’s residence, Carpenter said.
Students interviewed told authorities that no threats were made with the gun.
They said Diaz-Deleon possibly wanted to sell the gun and that’s why he brought it on the bus, Carpenter said.
Diaz-Deleon was placed under a $5,000 secured bond.
School officials have responded to the situation.
“We’re following the system policy and the state policy,” said Rick Freeman, principal of North Lincoln. “Basically it’s a 365-day suspension.”
And authorities are taking this incident seriously.
“I think it’s one of the most serious offenses that can occur at the school,” Carpenter said. “It’s something we don’t want to occur at all. It’s something we don’t want to occur more
in the future.”
This is the first time this year a student has been arrested for bringing a gun on school grounds in Lincoln County, Carpenter said.
