October 2, 2002 - The Lincoln Charter School’s ABCs testing scores for the 2001-02 school year remained close to the previous year’s levels,
according to statistics released last month by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

October 2, 2002 - The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People wants the Lincoln County
Board of Education to recognize Martin Luther King’s birthday as an official holiday.
NAACP representatives will discuss their grievance at the board’s meeting tonight at 7 in the Board of Education building.

Anti-radiation pills to be distributed

KI pills will be offered to residents near McGuire
October 2, 2002 - Local health departments will soon begin passing out anti-radiation pills to residents living near McGuire Nuclear Station.
The Potassium Iodide (KI) pill will be distributed to residents living within the 10-mile emergency planning zones, around McGuire, as well as Catawba Nuclear
Power Station, according to a press release from Maggie Dollar, Lincoln County Health Department director.

Council denies pool hall request

October 4, 2002 - Pool and alcohol still don’t mix in Lincolnton.
At its meeting Thursday night in City Hall, the City Council voted 3-2 against a motion made by Councilman Les Cloninger that would have permitted David and
Anna Kuss to operate pool tables in their private social club until midnight and still serve alcoholic beverages.

Tablets to be distributed

October 7, 2002 - County health officials will hand out Potassium Iodide tablets Saturday, Oct. 19 and
Tuesday, Oct. 22.
Residents living within the 10-mile emergency planning zone around McGuire Nuclear Station are not required to accept the pills, but they are encouraged,
Maggie Dollar, health director, said in a press release Friday.

Higher fines considered for zoning rules

October 7, 2002 - A proposed amendment to a county ordinance will raise fines for violating zoning
rules.
Another amendment will lessen the amount of time residents have to fix the problem before each day is considered a separate offense.
A public hearing on these amendments will be held tonight. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. in the Commissioners Room in the Citizens Center.

attorney’s office.
McWhirter, 40, of Boiling Springs,
wants to unseat Democratic incumbent Bill Young, who has been the top prosecutor in Lincoln and Cleveland counties for 16 years.

has known.

October 9, 2002 - The Lincoln County Health Department and the American Cancer Society are
sponsoring a county wide Pink Ribbon campaign to raise awareness about breast cancer.
During Pink Ribbon Week, free pink ribbons along with breast cancer educational materials will be distributed.

Local sales tax hiked by half-cent

County commissioners Monday night voted to raise the local sales tax by half a penny, thereby patching a gaping
hole left by state budget cuts.
Commissioners voted 4-1 with Commissioner Beth Saine voting against the increase.

Truck hits house

October 9, 2002 - A man was sent to Lincoln Medical Center Tuesday after his truck crashed into A.J. Lemmond's house at 930 Buffalo Shoals
Road. Authorities at the scene said the man, whose name was not available early today, was traveling down Buffalo Shoals and struck a car at the intersection of Bethel Church Road, continued through a
field, and crashed into the home. Three occupants of the home were not injured.
