Filled bowls raise funds

Hospice benefit

By DIANE TURBYFILL, LTN Staff Writer

October 4, 2002 - Bowls filled with piping hot soup are brewing to benefit Hospice of Lincoln County.

Rising Sun Pottery will host the 5th Annual Empty Bowls Benefit Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m.

The annual event offers soup with all the fixings and handmade pottery, with 50 percent of the proceeds benefiting Hospice.

Gary Lee, owner of Rising Sun Pottery, believes it is a combination of interests that keeps patrons coming back every year.

“Hospice does so much for the community, and people like pottery,” he says. “I think that’s why they go together so well.”

Lee, his students, guild members and area potters have created 488 clay bowls for the benefit.

“It’s a combined effort,” he adds.

Last year’s benefit sold 467 bowls. Lee remembers taking the last bowl home and eating his soup while soaking his feet after a full day at the shop.

Typically more than 200 people come out for the annual event.

“It’s like controlled chaos,” Lee says.

The experienced potter plans to make about 45 gallons of soup for the event. The 25 gallons went fast last year.

Lee and volunteers have been making bowls for more than two months in preparation for the big night.

The brown, blue and green swirled bowls line tables at the pottery shop days before the event, waiting to be sold and filled.

The night of the benefit, bowls will be sold for $10 each and filled with homemade vegetable beef or potato soup. Bread and beverages will accompany the meal.

Volunteers with the pottery guild, Hospice, students and caterer Ann Leatherman will provide desserts for the benefit.

A raffle will be held; door prizes will be given; the gallery will be open; and pieces will be for sale.

The following area businesses have donated goods and services for the annual event: Hospice of Lincoln County, Mailboxes, Etc.; Catering Company by Ann Leatherman, Warlick Funeral Home, Lincoln Times-News, City of Lincolnton Business and Community Development and Kathy’s Flowers.

For more information about the benefit, call 704-735-5820.
