East students step back in time

By SHERRY KITTS, LTN Staff Writer

Oct. 29 - A trip back in time is a tradition for East Lincoln Middle sixth-graders.

Last Wednesday class members traveled to Huntersville for an annual field trip to the Carolina Renaissance Festival.

From 2001 to the 1500s, with just a short bus ride, students landed in the make believe Fairhaven Village, a land of young maidens, a market place, and brave knights jousting before a king and queen.

“I think it is so cool!,” said East Lincoln student Josh Page as he watched the jousting.

The festival played host to many schools last week, and the trip is one that East Middle’s students — and teachers — look forward to.

“We have been coming for three years now,” teacher Brenda Kemp said. “We always have a good time.”

Youngsters giggled as they shuffled through large crowds in the market place, crunching fallen leaves.

Jewelry, flowered headpieces, face painting, leather goods and medieval music were offered to crowds in the busy market.

Delicious aromas filled the air, as students sampled roast turkey legs, candies and cinnamon almonds.

Students shopped, enjoyed rides, and took in shows that included sword swallowing.

East parent Tami Lead, a first-time field trip chaperone, was obviously enjoying the day.

“I love it and think it is great,” she said, “with all the period costumes and the atmosphere.”

Students gathered in the jousting arena, to cheer as the king and queen were introduced and knights galloped past.

Sir Gabrielle waved to his fans, as he yelled to the roaring crowd, “We live to fight and fight to win.”
